Overview

The Enteric Viral Pathogens Profile uses PCR-based molecular testing to screen for the five viruses responsible for most gastroenteritis cases. Norovirus alone causes an estimated 2 million infections annually in Australia.

Unlike bacterial infections that may require antibiotics, viral gastroenteritis typically needs supportive care and strict hygiene measures to prevent spread.

This test is commonly used by people experiencing prolonged vomiting and diarrhoea, those needing to confirm whether their illness is viral before returning to work or school, and families trying to prevent ongoing household transmission.

Symptoms

To screen for common enteric viruses in people with persistent gastroenteritis, those needing to distinguish viral from bacterial infection, or anyone requiring clearance documentation.

Questions

  • Norovirus, rotavirus, adenovirus, astrovirus, and sapovirus.
  • Viral gastroenteritis typically spreads person-to-person. Bacterial food poisoning usually comes from contaminated food.
  • Confirming a viral cause helps avoid unnecessary antibiotics and guides infection control measures.
  • Norovirus: 1 to 3 days. Rotavirus: 3 to 8 days. Duration varies between individuals.
  • Yes. Viral shedding can continue for days to weeks after symptoms resolve.
  • For bloody stools, persistent high fever, signs of dehydration, or symptoms lasting more than a week.

How to prepare

Collect a fresh stool sample using the provided kit. If possible, avoid antibiotics, antiviral medications, or probiotics for 48 hours before collection. Follow the kit instructions for handling and shipping.

After the test

If a virus is found, supportive care (hydration, rest, electrolyte replacement) is the standard approach. If all viruses are negative and symptoms persist, your practitioner may recommend further investigation.

Your test results will be available in your private dashboard. If there are any urgent issues, we'll let you know so you can follow up with your health professional.

Understanding results

Results report the presence or absence of each virus tested. A positive result indicates viral genetic material was found. A negative result means these common viruses were not found at the time of testing.

Simple health checks in my control

I didn't know that private blood tests were an option. Tried this platform as the packages suited what I wanted for a good price. Easy to follow instructions, and super quick results. Platform provides more information than my gp's ever have on the tests and what the results meant. Would like more clinics to be able to test at (specifically Capital Pathology) but there is a decent network. Will continue to use.
