Overview

The Faecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT) screens for hidden bleeding in the digestive tract. Pre-cancerous polyps and early-stage bowel conditions often produce small amounts of bleeding that are invisible to the eye but can be picked up by laboratory analysis.

Current Australian guidelines recommend regular bowel screening for adults aged 45 to 75 at average risk. A positive result does not mean cancer. It means further investigation (typically colonoscopy) is warranted.

Symptoms

To screen for hidden blood in stool as part of routine bowel screening for adults over 45, for those with a family history of bowel cancer, or anyone with unexplained digestive symptoms or iron deficiency anaemia.

Questions

  • Pre-cancerous polyps often bleed small amounts. Screening for hidden blood helps identify people who may benefit from colonoscopy.
  • Red meat, certain vegetables, vitamin C supplements, aspirin, NSAIDs, and bleeding haemorrhoids.
  • Further investigation, typically colonoscopy. Most positive results turn out to be benign.
  • Annual or biennial for average-risk adults aged 45 to 75.
  • No. Colonoscopy remains the gold standard. FOBT is a convenient first-line screening tool.
  • Bleeding can be intermittent. Multiple samples increase the chance of detection.

How to prepare

Avoid red meat, vitamin C supplements, and NSAIDs for 3 days before collection. Collect samples from 3 different bowel movements as directed. Avoid collection during menstruation or if you have actively bleeding haemorrhoids.

After the test

If positive, follow up with your GP or gastroenterologist for further investigation, typically colonoscopy. Most positive results are caused by benign conditions. Continue routine screening as recommended.

Your test results will be available in your private dashboard. If there are any urgent issues, we'll let you know so you can follow up with your health professional.

Understanding results

Results report positive or negative. A positive result means hidden blood was found and further investigation is recommended. A negative result means no significant bleeding was found at the time of testing.

Simple health checks in my control

I didn't know that private blood tests were an option. Tried this platform as the packages suited what I wanted for a good price. Easy to follow instructions, and super quick results. Platform provides more information than my gp's ever have on the tests and what the results meant. Would like more clinics to be able to test at (specifically Capital Pathology) but there is a decent network. Will continue to use.
