How to prepare
Fasting for 8-12 hours recommended for most accurate results, particularly for bilirubin and protein measurements. Avoid alcohol for 24-48 hours before testing. Inform your healthcare provider about all medications and supplements as many can affect liver enzymes. Stay hydrated but avoid excessive water intake immediately before testing.
After the test
Share your results with your GP or relevant specialist. If one or more markers are outside the reference range, your practitioner may request further blood tests, imaging, or specialist review.
If all markers are within range but you have ongoing symptoms, your practitioner may investigate other causes.
Your test results will be available in your private dashboard. If there are any urgent issues, we'll let you know so you can follow up with your health professional.
Understanding results
Each marker in the LFT panel has its own reference range:
- ALT and AST: liver enzymes that rise when liver cells are damaged
- GGT: sensitive to bile duct stress and alcohol use
- ALP: elevated in bile duct obstruction and some bone conditions
- Bilirubin: raised levels can cause jaundice
- Albumin: reflects liver protein production
- Total protein: combined albumin and globulin
Your practitioner will look at the pattern of results alongside your symptoms, medications, and health history.
