Blood Deficiency & Anaemia

Measures IgA antibodies against tissue transglutaminase, the recommended first-line blood test for coeliac disease screening. Also used to monitor dietary adherence in people already diagnosed with coeliac disease on a gluten-free diet.

Measures unconjugated (indirect) bilirubin, produced when red blood cells are broken down before liver processing. Elevated levels suggest haemolysis or reduced liver processing capacity, as seen in haemolytic anaemia and Gilbert's syndrome.

Measures INR, Prothrombin Time (PT), and APTT to assess the blood's clotting pathways. Used to monitor warfarin and heparin therapy, screen for bleeding disorders, and assess clotting function before surgery.

Measures blood cobalt levels. Essential component of vitamin B12 but toxic in excess. Used to monitor metal-on-metal hip implant wear and occupational exposure in hard metal industries.

Measures serum copper to assess iron metabolism, connective tissue health, and neurological function. Often ordered alongside zinc, as the two minerals compete for absorption.

Measures ferritin, the body's iron storage protein and the most sensitive marker for iron depletion. Used to investigate fatigue, hair thinning, and suspected iron deficiency or overload. Fasting for 8 to 12 hours is recommended.

Australia's most commonly ordered blood test. Measures red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, haemoglobin, haematocrit, and cell indices to screen for anaemia, infection, immune disorders, and haematological conditions. No fasting required.

Full iron panel measuring serum iron, ferritin, transferrin, transferrin saturation, and TIBC. Requires an 8 to 12 hour fast. Used to investigate iron deficiency, iron overload, and anaemia.

Measures LDH, an enzyme released when cells are damaged. Non-specific but useful for assessing haemolysis, liver conditions, certain cancers, and muscle damage. Best interpreted alongside more targeted tests.

The MTHFR Gene Test looks for variants in the MTHFR gene (C677T and A1298C) that can reduce the activity of an enzyme involved in folate metabolism and the recycling of homocysteine. Understanding your MTHFR status can help interpret your homocysteine, folate, and B12 levels.

Measures copper inside red blood cells, a more stable indicator of tissue stores than serum copper. Useful when serum results are confounded by inflammation, pregnancy, or oestrogen use.

Measures serum vitamin B12 (cobalamin), needed for healthy nerve function, red blood cell production and DNA synthesis. Found almost exclusively in animal products, making deficiency common in vegetarians, vegans and people with absorption conditions. Deficiency develops slowly and can cause nerve damage if left unaddressed.

Measures riboflavin (vitamin B2) in blood. Riboflavin supports energy production, skin and eye health, and the metabolism of other B vitamins. Deficiency is uncommon with a varied diet but can occur in people who avoid dairy and meat, have absorption issues, or drink heavily.

Measures pyridoxal-5-phosphate (PLP), the active form of vitamin B6, in blood. B6 is involved in neurotransmitter production, haemoglobin synthesis and immune function. Both deficiency and high-dose excess can cause peripheral neuropathy, making testing useful for checking levels at both ends of the range.

Measures serum folate (vitamin B9), needed for DNA synthesis, cell division and red blood cell production. Adequate folate is particularly important in early pregnancy to reduce neural tube defect risk. Works closely with vitamin B12, and deficiency in either can cause megaloblastic anaemia.
