Overview

The H. pylori Stool Antigen Test checks for active Helicobacter pylori infection by identifying bacterial proteins shed into your digestive tract. Available as an at-home collection kit, it provides accurate screening without requiring invasive procedures like endoscopy.

H. pylori infects approximately half the world's population, though many people carry it without symptoms. When symptoms develop, they typically include stomach pain, bloating, nausea and a burning sensation in the upper abdomen. Untreated H. pylori infection is associated with chronic gastritis, peptic ulcers and increased risk of stomach cancer over the long term.

Symptoms

Suited to people with stomach pain, bloating, nausea or ulcer-type symptoms, those confirming H. pylori treatment success, or anyone with a family history of stomach ulcers or cancer wanting screening.

Questions

  • The H. pylori stool antigen test has 95 to 98 percent accuracy for identifying active infection.
  • Stool antigen tests check for active infection. Blood antibody tests remain positive long after infection clears, making them unreliable for confirming treatment success.
  • Proton pump inhibitors, antibiotics, and bismuth compounds can cause false negative results. Stop these at least 2 weeks before testing if medically appropriate.
  • Wait at least 4 weeks after completing antibiotic treatment before retesting.
  • A positive result indicates active H. pylori infection. Your healthcare provider can prescribe appropriate combination antibiotic therapy.
  • Chronic untreated H. pylori infection is associated with increased stomach cancer risk over time.

How to prepare

Collect a fresh stool sample using the provided collection container and tools. Stop antibiotics, proton pump inhibitors (such as omeprazole or pantoprazole) and bismuth compounds for at least 2 weeks before testing, as these can cause false negative results. Check with your healthcare provider before stopping any medications.

After the test

A positive result should be discussed with your healthcare provider, who can prescribe appropriate antibiotic treatment. Follow-up testing is recommended at least 4 to 6 weeks after completing treatment to confirm successful eradication.

Your test results will be available in your private dashboard. If there are any urgent issues, we'll let you know so you can follow up with your health professional.

Understanding results

Results show positive or negative for H. pylori antigen. A positive result indicates active bacterial infection. A negative result suggests no active infection at the time of testing. If you have been taking antibiotics or acid-suppressing medications, false negative results are possible.

Simple health checks in my control

I didn't know that private blood tests were an option. Tried this platform as the packages suited what I wanted for a good price. Easy to follow instructions, and super quick results. Platform provides more information than my gp's ever have on the tests and what the results meant. Would like more clinics to be able to test at (specifically Capital Pathology) but there is a decent network. Will continue to use.
