Overview

Secretory IgA (sIgA) is an antibody that coats your intestinal lining, forming a barrier that helps prevent pathogens and food antigens from crossing into the gut wall. When sIgA levels are low, this barrier function is reduced.

Chronic stress is one of the more common factors that can suppress sIgA production.

Symptoms

Useful for assessing gut immune function, investigating frequent infections or food sensitivities, and as part of a broader gut health evaluation.

Questions

  • An antibody produced at mucosal surfaces including your gut lining. It acts as your intestine's first-line immune defence.
  • Chronic stress is a major factor. Poor nutrition, chronic infections, certain medications, and ageing may also reduce production.
  • Active gut infections, intestinal inflammation, food reactions, or other immune activation in the gut.
  • With targeted support, some people see improvement within 2 to 3 months.
  • Certain Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains may support sIgA production.
  • Chronic stress can directly suppress sIgA production.

How to prepare

No special dietary restrictions required. Collect a fresh stool sample using the provided kit. If possible, avoid antibiotics for 2 weeks before testing.

After the test

If levels are low, your healthcare provider may discuss targeted probiotics, immune-supporting nutrients, and stress management strategies. If levels are high, further investigation may be recommended.

Your test results will be available in your private dashboard. If there are any urgent issues, we'll let you know so you can follow up with your health professional.

Understanding results

Normal levels (150 to 2000 ug/g) suggest healthy gut immune function. Low levels (below 150 ug/g) may suggest reduced intestinal immune activity. Very high levels (above 2000 ug/g) may be associated with an active immune response.

Simple health checks in my control

I didn't know that private blood tests were an option. Tried this platform as the packages suited what I wanted for a good price. Easy to follow instructions, and super quick results. Platform provides more information than my gp's ever have on the tests and what the results meant. Would like more clinics to be able to test at (specifically Capital Pathology) but there is a decent network. Will continue to use.
