Calprotectin Stool Test Kit

$97.00 AUD

Chronic diarrhoea, bloating or abdominal pain, and wondering whether inflammation or a functional cause is behind your symptoms?

Measures faecal calprotectin, a protein released by white blood cells during intestinal inflammation. Used to distinguish inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and help guide whether further investigation such as colonoscopy is warranted.

Overview

Calprotectin is a protein released by white blood cells during intestinal inflammation. This stool test measures calprotectin levels to help determine whether digestive symptoms may stem from inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) or non-inflammatory causes like IBS.

IBD (Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis) involves immune-mediated intestinal inflammation that requires specific management. IBS causes similar symptoms without measurable inflammation and responds to different approaches. Calprotectin is one of the most reliable markers for distinguishing between them.

This at-home stool collection kit includes a prepaid return satchel. Results help guide whether further investigation such as colonoscopy may be appropriate, or whether symptoms can be managed conservatively.

Symptoms

Suited to people with chronic diarrhoea, abdominal pain, bloating, or persistent digestive symptoms where the distinction between inflammatory and non-inflammatory causes is unclear.

Questions

  • Calprotectin is a protein released by white blood cells during intestinal inflammation. Elevated levels suggest gut inflammation, while normal levels point toward functional conditions like IBS.
  • It helps distinguish inflammatory conditions (Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis) from non-inflammatory ones (IBS). This information can guide whether further investigation is appropriate.
  • Levels above 50 micrograms per gram generally suggest inflammation. Levels above 150 to 200 micrograms per gram are more strongly associated with inflammatory bowel disease.
  • NSAIDs (ibuprofen, aspirin) can cause intestinal inflammation and raise calprotectin levels. Avoid these for two weeks before testing if possible.
  • Normal calprotectin makes IBD less likely. Symptoms may reflect IBS, which typically responds to dietary and lifestyle approaches. Discuss the results with your doctor.
  • A small stool sample is collected at home using the provided kit. The kit includes a prepaid return satchel for posting your sample to the lab.

How to prepare

Collect a fresh stool sample using the provided collection kit. Avoid anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs like ibuprofen) for two weeks before testing if possible. Follow the kit instructions for proper sample collection and return shipping.

After the test

Discuss your results with your doctor. Elevated calprotectin may prompt referral to a gastroenterologist for further investigation. Normal levels may support a focus on dietary and lifestyle approaches for symptom management. Your healthcare provider will advise on the most appropriate next steps based on your full clinical picture.

Your test results will be available in your private dashboard. If there are any urgent issues, we'll let you know so you can follow up with your health professional.

Understanding results

Results show your calprotectin level compared to reference ranges. Elevated levels (typically above 50 micrograms per gram) suggest intestinal inflammation and possible IBD. Normal levels often point toward functional conditions like IBS. Your healthcare provider will interpret results alongside your symptoms and history.

Simple health checks in my control

I didn't know that private blood tests were an option. Tried this platform as the packages suited what I wanted for a good price. Easy to follow instructions, and super quick results. Platform provides more information than my gp's ever have on the tests and what the results meant. Would like more clinics to be able to test at (specifically Capital Pathology) but there is a decent network. Will continue to use.
