$423.00 AUD

Dealing with persistent bloating, excess gas, or abdominal discomfort that standard gut tests have not explained?

Overview

This SIBO breath test measures hydrogen and methane gas in your breath at timed intervals after you consume two substrates: lactulose and fructose. Lactulose passes through the entire small intestine; fructose is absorbed in the upper section. Testing with both gives data from different regions.

Symptoms

Designed for people experiencing persistent bloating, excess gas, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, constipation, or symptoms where standard testing has not provided a clear explanation. Also relevant for people with an IBS diagnosis wanting to investigate whether SIBO may be a contributing factor.

Questions

  • Hydrogen and methane gas levels in your breath at timed intervals after consuming lactulose and fructose substrates.
  • Lactulose passes through the entire small intestine while fructose is absorbed in the upper section. Both together give a more complete assessment.
  • You breathe into collection tubes at timed intervals, typically every 20 minutes for 3 hours after each substrate.
  • Stop antibiotics 2 weeks before, follow a restricted diet the day before, and fast for 12 hours overnight.
  • This test screens for bacterial overgrowth. It does not diagnose IBS.
  • A positive result suggests bacterial overgrowth may be present based on gas patterns. Your practitioner will discuss next steps.
  • A negative result does not rule out all causes. Some practitioners may consider hydrogen sulphide SIBO or other conditions.

How to prepare

2 weeks before: Stop antibiotics and antimicrobial supplements.
1 week before: Stop prokinetic agents and laxatives.
1 day before: Eat only from the allowed food list (white rice, plain chicken or fish, eggs, plain white bread, clear broth). Drink only water.
Morning of: Fast for 12 hours. Do not smoke, chew gum, or exercise vigorously.
Lactulose and fructose are tested on separate days.

After the test

Book a follow-up consultation with your practitioner to review your breath test results. Bring both substrate results. Do not self-treat based on results alone.

Your test results will be available in your private dashboard. If there are any urgent issues, we'll let you know so you can follow up with your health professional.

Understanding results

Hydrogen: A rise of more than 20 ppm above baseline within the first 90 minutes is generally considered positive.
Methane: Levels above 10 ppm at any point may suggest methanogenic archaea. Methane-dominant patterns are associated with constipation-type symptoms.
Your practitioner will interpret your gas curves in the context of your symptoms.

Simple health checks in my control

I didn't know that private blood tests were an option. Tried this platform as the packages suited what I wanted for a good price. Easy to follow instructions, and super quick results. Platform provides more information than my gp's ever have on the tests and what the results meant. Would like more clinics to be able to test at (specifically Capital Pathology) but there is a decent network. Will continue to use.
