Ferritin Blood Test

$48.00 AUD

Persistent fatigue, weakness, or shortness of breath, and wondering if your iron stores might be depleted or if you're storing too much iron?

Measures your body's iron storage protein, the most accurate indicator of total iron reserves. Low ferritin causes fatigue even before anaemia develops. High ferritin may indicate iron overload or inflammation requiring investigation.

Overview

The Ferritin test measures your body's iron storage protein, providing the most accurate assessment of total iron reserves. Unlike haemoglobin (which only drops once reserves are depleted), ferritin reveals iron deficiency early, often explaining fatigue when other tests appear normal.

Iron deficiency remains the most common nutritional deficiency worldwide, particularly affecting women of reproductive age, vegetarians, endurance athletes, and those with digestive conditions affecting absorption. Symptoms include fatigue, weakness, poor concentration, breathlessness, and reduced exercise tolerance—often attributed to other causes when depleted iron stores are responsible.

This test suits Australians experiencing unexplained fatigue, those with known risk factors for iron deficiency, and anyone wanting to optimise their iron status for energy and performance.

Symptoms

Essential for people with fatigue, heavy menstrual periods, vegetarian/vegan diets, suspected iron deficiency or overload, or anyone wanting accurate iron storage assessment.

Questions

  • Iron is the mineral itself. Ferritin is the protein that stores iron in your tissues. Ferritin levels reflect your total iron reserves, while serum iron shows what's currently circulating.
  • Yes. Ferritin drops before haemoglobin does. You can have depleted iron stores causing fatigue while still having enough circulating iron to maintain normal haemoglobin levels.
  • Optimal levels are debated, but many practitioners aim for 50-100 μg/L for energy and wellbeing, though labs may consider anything above 15-20 μg/L as normal.
  • High ferritin can indicate iron overload (haemochromatosis), inflammation, infection, liver disease, or certain cancers. Elevated levels require investigation rather than iron supplementation.
  • With iron supplementation, ferritin typically rises within 2-3 months, though rebuilding optimal stores may take 6-12 months depending on the degree of deficiency and absorption.
  • Red meat provides highly absorbable heme iron. Plant sources (legumes, leafy greens) provide non-heme iron—pair with vitamin C to enhance absorption and avoid tea or coffee with meals.

How to prepare

No special preparation required. Inform healthcare provider of all iron supplements, multivitamins, and medications that might affect iron levels or ferritin production.

After the test

Address abnormal ferritin through iron supplementation for deficiency, dietary modifications, treatment of underlying causes, and regular monitoring. Work with hematologists for complex cases.

Your test results will be available in your private dashboard. If there are any urgent issues, we'll let you know so you can follow up with your health professional.

Understanding results

Results show ferritin levels compared to normal ranges. Low levels indicate iron deficiency, while high levels may suggest iron overload or inflammation requiring appropriate evaluation.

Simple health checks in my control

I didn't know that private blood tests were an option. Tried this platform as the packages suited what I wanted for a good price. Easy to follow instructions, and super quick results. Platform provides more information than my gp's ever have on the tests and what the results meant. Would like more clinics to be able to test at (specifically Capital Pathology) but there is a decent network. Will continue to use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most collection centres accept walk-ins. Some may require a booking - check details when you click on your chosen location.

If your test needs fasting, we’ll include that in your instructions after you order. Fasting usually means no food for 8–12 hours, but water is fine.

Just your pathology referral form (we email it to you)

Of course. Just maybe don’t bring the friend who faints at the sight of blood.

They’re the highly trained professionals who take your blood sample - with a steady hand and a sharp needle. They love blood, but don’t worry… they’re not vampires. Just legends who make blood tests quick, clean, and (almost) painless.

Some of our tests include Urine, Stool, Saliva and more. Each test will have a clear description on what sample you will need to give and instructions on how.
