Overview

This test uses polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology to screen for 10 parasitic worms in a single stool sample. PCR works by detecting the DNA of each organism, making it more sensitive than traditional microscopy for many helminth infections.

The organisms screened include hookworm (Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus), roundworm (Ascaris lumbricoides), threadworm (Strongyloides stercoralis), pinworm (Enterobius vermicularis), tapeworm (Taenia species), whipworm (Trichuris trichiura), and microsporidian parasites.

Helminth infections are often underdiagnosed in Australia because symptoms (bloating, abdominal discomfort, fatigue, altered bowel habits, or skin irritation) are non-specific and easily attributed to other causes.

Collection is done at home using the kit provided. You post your sample back to the Nutripath laboratory in the prepaid satchel.

Symptoms

Suited to people with unexplained digestive symptoms such as bloating, abdominal discomfort, or altered bowel habits. Also relevant for those who have recently returned from overseas travel (particularly to tropical or subtropical regions), people with regular contact with animals or soil, and anyone with ongoing systemic symptoms including fatigue or skin irritation that have not been fully explained by other testing.

Questions

  • A positive result indicates the detection of DNA from that organism in your sample, which may suggest current or recent infection. It should be discussed with your healthcare practitioner.
  • A negative result means DNA from the screened organisms was not detected. This does not completely rule out infection.
  • Standard stool microscopy looks for parasitic eggs or larvae under a microscope. PCR detects the DNA of each organism, which is generally more sensitive for many helminth infections.
  • The test screens for 10 common parasitic worms, including hookworm, roundworm, threadworm, pinworm, tapeworm, whipworm, and microsporidian parasites.
  • People with unexplained digestive symptoms, those who have recently travelled to tropical or subtropical regions, people with regular contact with animals or soil, and anyone with persistent symptoms not explained by other investigation.
  • Antiparasitic medications may affect the test result. Speak with your healthcare provider before collecting your sample if you are currently taking medication of this type.
  • No fasting is required. You can collect your sample at any time of day.

How to prepare

Before you collect your sample, here is what to keep in mind:

Antiparasitic medications: If you are currently taking antiparasitic medications (such as albendazole, mebendazole, ivermectin, or praziquantel), speak with your healthcare provider before collecting your sample.

Other medications: Most other medications do not affect this test.

Dietary restrictions: No specific dietary restrictions are required. You do not need to fast.

Timing: You can collect your sample at any time of day. Collect using the kit provided and follow the enclosed instructions carefully.

Returning your kit: Once collected and packaged, post your sample on the same day or the following business day using the prepaid return satchel. Avoid leaving the kit in a hot letterbox or car.

After the test

Once you have your results, share them with your healthcare practitioner. They can interpret the findings alongside your symptoms and health history.

If your results indicate the detection of parasitic DNA, your practitioner can discuss what this may mean for you. If your results are negative but symptoms continue, your practitioner may recommend additional testing.

Your test results will be available in your private dashboard. If there are any urgent issues, we'll let you know so you can follow up with your health professional.

Understanding results

A positive result indicates the detection of DNA from that organism in your sample, which may suggest current or recent infection. This should be discussed with your healthcare practitioner.

A negative result means DNA from the screened organisms was not detected. This does not completely rule out infection, as some infections may not be detectable at the time of collection. If symptoms persist, your practitioner may recommend further investigation.

Simple health checks in my control

I didn't know that private blood tests were an option. Tried this platform as the packages suited what I wanted for a good price. Easy to follow instructions, and super quick results. Platform provides more information than my gp's ever have on the tests and what the results meant. Would like more clinics to be able to test at (specifically Capital Pathology) but there is a decent network. Will continue to use.
