Overview

C. difficile is a bacterium that can overgrow in the gut after antibiotic treatment disrupts normal protective flora. When it multiplies, it produces toxins that cause inflammation in the colon.

Symptoms typically begin within days to weeks of antibiotic use: watery diarrhoea, abdominal cramping, fever, and sometimes blood in the stool. C. diff infection requires specific antibiotic treatment that differs from the antibiotics that may have triggered it.

This at-home enzyme immunoassay (EIA) screens for C. diff toxins A and B, helping determine whether your symptoms may be related to a C. difficile infection.

Symptoms

Suited to people with diarrhoea following antibiotic use, suspected C. diff infection, or recurrent antibiotic-associated colitis.

Questions

  • Watery diarrhoea (three or more loose stools daily), abdominal cramping, fever, or blood in the stool within two months of antibiotic use may suggest C. diff infection.
  • Antibiotics reduce protective gut bacteria, allowing C. diff to multiply and produce toxins. Broad-spectrum antibiotics and multiple courses increase the risk.
  • C. diff spores can survive on surfaces for months. Hand washing with soap and water (not alcohol sanitiser) is important. Spores resist many common disinfectants.
  • Yes, roughly 15 to 25 percent of patients experience recurrence. Completing the full treatment course and discussing probiotic use with your doctor may help reduce the risk.
  • Colonisation means C. diff is present without causing symptoms. Infection means the bacteria are producing toxins that are causing illness. Only infection requires treatment.
  • The EIA test detects C. diff toxin proteins A and B directly. A positive result in someone with symptoms strongly suggests active infection. Your doctor interprets results alongside your clinical picture.

How to prepare

Collect a fresh stool sample using the provided sterile container. Avoid new antibiotics or antidiarrhoeal medications before collection if possible (check with your healthcare provider). Refrigerate the sample and ship it back promptly for the best results.

After the test

If your result is positive, contact your doctor promptly. They will advise on appropriate treatment and hygiene measures. C. diff can recur, so follow-up monitoring may be recommended. Your doctor may involve a gastroenterologist or infectious disease specialist depending on severity.

Your test results will be available in your private dashboard. If there are any urgent issues, we'll let you know so you can follow up with your health professional.

Understanding results

Results indicate whether C. difficile toxins A and B are present or absent. A positive result means C. diff toxins were found and you should contact your doctor promptly. A negative result helps rule out C. diff as a cause of your symptoms. Your healthcare provider will interpret results in context.

Simple health checks in my control

I didn't know that private blood tests were an option. Tried this platform as the packages suited what I wanted for a good price. Easy to follow instructions, and super quick results. Platform provides more information than my gp's ever have on the tests and what the results meant. Would like more clinics to be able to test at (specifically Capital Pathology) but there is a decent network. Will continue to use.
