How to prepare
You'll collect a stool sample at home using the kit provided. Key preparation points:
- Follow the collection instructions carefully to avoid contamination
- Some practitioners recommend avoiding probiotics for 2 weeks before testing (check with your practitioner)
- Avoid antimicrobial supplements or antibiotics before testing unless medically necessary (discuss with your practitioner)
- Collect the sample and return it to the lab as instructed in the kit
After the test
- Review with a practitioner: Share your results with a naturopath, integrative GP, or functional medicine practitioner who can interpret the microbial patterns alongside your symptoms.
- Discuss dietary strategies: Your practitioner may recommend dietary changes to support beneficial bacteria or address any imbalances flagged in the report.
- Address specific findings: If pathogens or parasites are detected, your practitioner can discuss appropriate interventions and whether further testing is needed.
- Retest after interventions: If your practitioner recommends changes, retesting in 2-3 months can help assess whether the microbial balance has shifted.
Your test results will be available in your private dashboard. If there are any urgent issues, we'll let you know so you can follow up with your health professional.
Understanding results
Your report will show levels for each organism and marker tested, compared against reference ranges. Results are typically grouped into:
- Beneficial bacteria: Low levels of key species like Lactobacillus or Bifidobacterium may suggest an imbalance in the gut ecosystem.
- Pathogenic organisms: The presence of certain bacteria, parasites, or yeasts above reference levels may point to an infection or overgrowth.
- Opportunistic organisms: These are normally present in small amounts but may cause issues when they overgrow.
- Digestive markers: Markers like elastase, calprotectin, and secretory IgA can help your practitioner assess digestive function beyond just microbial balance.
Your practitioner will interpret the results as a whole pattern rather than focusing on individual markers in isolation.
