M2 Pyruvate Kinase (M2PK) Stool Test Kit

$99.00 AUD

Looking for a bowel cancer screening option that does not require you to change your diet before collecting a sample?

At-home stool test measuring M2 Pyruvate Kinase, a metabolic enzyme associated with colorectal changes. Unlike FOBT, it is not affected by diet or non-cancerous bleeding. Elevated levels warrant further investigation with colonoscopy.

Overview

M2 Pyruvate Kinase (M2-PK) is a form of the pyruvate kinase enzyme found in rapidly dividing cells. When cells in the bowel wall undergo changes associated with tumour development, they shift their metabolism and release M2-PK into the stool. Measuring this enzyme provides a different angle on bowel screening compared to tests that look for blood alone.

The main advantage of M2-PK testing over faecal occult blood testing (FOBT) is that it does not require dietary preparation. FOBT results can be influenced by red meat, certain vegetables, and non-cancerous sources of gastrointestinal bleeding. M2-PK is not affected by these factors, which reduces the chance of a misleading result.

An elevated M2-PK result does not confirm cancer. It indicates that further investigation, typically colonoscopy, is appropriate. Similarly, a normal result lowers the likelihood of significant colorectal changes but does not replace routine screening recommendations from your healthcare provider.

This test is posted to you as an at-home collection kit. You collect a small stool sample, seal it in the provided container, and return it using the prepaid packaging included.

Symptoms

Suited to adults aged 45 and over who want routine bowel cancer screening, people who prefer a test that does not require dietary preparation, or those with risk factors for colorectal cancer.

Questions

  • FOBT looks for blood in stool. M2-PK measures a metabolic enzyme that cancer cells produce. They measure different things and can be used together.
  • No. Unlike FOBT, M2-PK is not affected by diet, so no dietary restrictions are needed before testing.
  • M2-PK may pick up some precancerous polyps, though sensitivity varies. It is more reliable for established cancers. Colonoscopy remains the most thorough option.
  • No stool test replaces colonoscopy for bowel cancer screening. Positive results should be followed up with colonoscopy. Colonoscopy can also remove polyps during the procedure.
  • Generally at age 45 to 50 for average-risk individuals, earlier for those with a family history or inflammatory bowel disease. Your healthcare provider can advise on timing.
  • Annual screening is typical for stool-based tests in average-risk adults. Your healthcare provider may recommend a different schedule based on your risk factors.

How to prepare

No dietary restrictions needed. Collect a stool sample using the kit provided, following the instructions included. Avoid contaminating the sample with urine or toilet water. Post it back promptly using the prepaid materials for the best results.

After the test

If M2-PK is elevated, your healthcare provider will advise on further investigation, which typically includes colonoscopy. Continue routine bowel cancer screening at the intervals your healthcare provider recommends, regardless of this result.

Your test results will be available in your private dashboard. If there are any urgent issues, we'll let you know so you can follow up with your health professional.

Understanding results

Your report shows M2-PK levels compared to reference ranges. Elevated levels may suggest colorectal changes that need further investigation. A result within the normal range is reassuring but does not replace the need for regular screening, as no single test picks up every case. Discuss your result with your healthcare provider regardless of the outcome.

Simple health checks in my control

I didn't know that private blood tests were an option. Tried this platform as the packages suited what I wanted for a good price. Easy to follow instructions, and super quick results. Platform provides more information than my gp's ever have on the tests and what the results meant. Would like more clinics to be able to test at (specifically Capital Pathology) but there is a decent network. Will continue to use.
