Overview

The IgA Vegetarian Foods Panel measures IgA antibody responses to 96 plant-based foods. Vegetarian and vegan diets often concentrate on specific food groups, and some individuals develop gut-level immune responses to staples they eat frequently.

IgA antibodies reflect mucosal immunity. Elevated IgA to specific plant foods suggests your gut's immune system has responded to those foods, but does not automatically mean they are causing symptoms. Results should guide supervised elimination trials rather than serve as a standalone reason to remove foods from your diet.

This panel suits vegetarians and vegans with unexplained digestive symptoms, those with negative results on standard food panels, and anyone wanting to investigate gut-level reactions to plant-based diet components.

Symptoms

Suited for vegetarians and vegans with digestive symptoms, people investigating plant-food sensitivities, or anyone wanting a gut-level assessment of reactions to plant-based diet components.

Questions

  • Yes. Any food can trigger immune responses in susceptible individuals. Legumes, grains, nuts, and other vegetarian staples can cause reactions in some people.
  • Vegetarian diets rely heavily on specific plant foods that may not be adequately tested in standard panels. Frequent consumption of the same foods may contribute to sensitivities.
  • Legumes are a major protein source in vegetarian diets and are consumed frequently. Some individuals develop gut-level reactions to specific legumes.
  • Yes, with planning. Identifying specific triggers lets you focus on plant foods that work for your body while finding alternative nutrient sources for the ones you remove.
  • In many cases, yes. Many plant food sensitivities relate to gut barrier dysfunction. Addressing gut health with your provider may reduce reactivity over time.
  • Not necessarily. Work with a practitioner to identify specific triggers and support gut healing. Most vegetarians can find adequate plant foods that work for them.

How to prepare

No fasting required. Continue eating your normal vegetarian or vegan diet so the test reflects current food exposures. Avoid antihistamines for 48 hours before collection. Collect the blood spot sample using the provided allergy card and post it back promptly.

After the test

Discuss your results with a healthcare provider or plant-based nutrition specialist. A supervised elimination of high-reactive foods for 4 to 6 weeks, followed by systematic reintroduction, can help identify true triggers. Your provider can ensure you maintain adequate protein and nutrient intake from alternative plant sources during the elimination period.

Your test results will be available in your private dashboard. If there are any urgent issues, we'll let you know so you can follow up with your health professional.

Understanding results

Results show IgA antibody levels for each of the 96 plant-based foods tested, categorised as normal, borderline, or elevated. Elevated IgA suggests your gut's immune system has responded to those foods, but does not confirm they are causing symptoms. Discuss your results with a healthcare provider who can guide dietary modifications while maintaining adequate nutrition on a plant-based diet.

Simple health checks in my control

I didn't know that private blood tests were an option. Tried this platform as the packages suited what I wanted for a good price. Easy to follow instructions, and super quick results. Platform provides more information than my gp's ever have on the tests and what the results meant. Would like more clinics to be able to test at (specifically Capital Pathology) but there is a decent network. Will continue to use.
