Overview

The EUC is the standard kidney blood panel in Australian pathology. It measures seven markers: sodium, potassium, chloride, bicarbonate, urea, creatinine, and eGFR. Together these provide a complete picture of kidney filtration and electrolyte balance.

The EUC is one of the most commonly ordered panels in Australian medicine. It is used in routine health screening, hospital admissions, medication monitoring, and the ongoing management of diabetes, hypertension, and known kidney disease. No fasting is required.

Symptoms

Suited to people monitoring kidney health, managing diabetes or hypertension, checking medication effects, investigating fatigue, swelling, or urinary changes, or wanting a baseline of kidney and electrolyte function.

Questions

  • Seven markers: sodium, potassium, chloride, bicarbonate, urea, creatinine, and eGFR.
  • No fasting is required. Avoid large amounts of cooked meat in the 24 hours beforehand.
  • It covers both kidney function and electrolytes in one test, making it practical for routine checks and medication monitoring.
  • Kidney conditions, dehydration, vomiting, diarrhoea, medications, and adrenal disorders.
  • Estimated kidney filtration rate, calculated from creatinine, age, and sex. The primary marker for staging chronic kidney disease.
  • Results are sent via the Bloody Good Tests platform. Share them with your GP for interpretation.

How to prepare

No special preparation required. Inform healthcare provider of all medications, especially those affecting kidney function, and any recent changes in diet or fluid intake.

After the test

Share your results with your GP. Electrolyte abnormalities may prompt further investigation. If creatinine is elevated or eGFR is low, your practitioner may request repeat testing or a nephrology referral.

Your test results will be available in your private dashboard. If there are any urgent issues, we'll let you know so you can follow up with your health professional.

Understanding results

The EUC covers electrolytes (sodium, potassium, chloride, bicarbonate) and kidney markers (urea, creatinine, eGFR). Your practitioner will interpret all results alongside your symptoms, medications, and health history.

Simple health checks in my control

I didn't know that private blood tests were an option. Tried this platform as the packages suited what I wanted for a good price. Easy to follow instructions, and super quick results. Platform provides more information than my gp's ever have on the tests and what the results meant. Would like more clinics to be able to test at (specifically Capital Pathology) but there is a decent network. Will continue to use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most collection centres accept walk-ins. Some may require a booking - check details when you click on your chosen location.

If your test needs fasting, we’ll include that in your instructions after you order. Fasting usually means no food for 8–12 hours, but water is fine.

Just your pathology referral form (we email it to you)

Of course. Just maybe don’t bring the friend who faints at the sight of blood.

They’re the highly trained professionals who take your blood sample - with a steady hand and a sharp needle. They love blood, but don’t worry… they’re not vampires. Just legends who make blood tests quick, clean, and (almost) painless.

Some of our tests include Urine, Stool, Saliva and more. Each test will have a clear description on what sample you will need to give and instructions on how.
