Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR) Blood Test

$38.00 AUD

Overview

Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) is a calculated measure of how much blood your kidneys filter each minute. It is derived from your blood creatinine level, age, and sex. An eGFR of 90 or above is generally considered normal. An eGFR below 60 for more than three months is consistent with chronic kidney disease.

A single low eGFR does not confirm kidney disease. Temporary factors such as dehydration, high meat intake, and certain medications can lower the result.

Symptoms

Suited to people monitoring kidney function, managing diabetes or hypertension, assessing medication effects, or wanting a clearer measure of kidney filtration beyond creatinine alone.

Questions

  • Estimated kidney filtration rate, calculated from creatinine, age, and sex.
  • No fasting is required. Avoid large amounts of cooked meat beforehand.
  • 90 or above is generally considered normal. Below 60 for more than three months is consistent with CKD.
  • Reduced kidney filtration capacity. The lower the number, the less effectively the kidneys are filtering.
  • Creatinine is the raw measurement. eGFR adjusts for age and sex, making it more useful clinically.

How to prepare

No fasting required. Can be taken at any time of day. Ensure accurate reporting of age, gender, and race as these factors are used in the calculation. Inform your healthcare provider about medications that might affect kidney function. Stay normally hydrated before testing.

After the test

Share your results with your GP. If eGFR is below 60 or has declined, your practitioner may request repeat testing, urine protein testing, or imaging.

Your test results will be available in your private dashboard. If there are any urgent issues, we'll let you know so you can follow up with your health professional.

Understanding results

eGFR of 90 or above is generally normal. Values below 60 persisting over three months classify chronic kidney disease. CKD is staged from G1 through G5. Your practitioner will interpret eGFR alongside creatinine, urea, and urine tests.

Simple health checks in my control

I didn't know that private blood tests were an option. Tried this platform as the packages suited what I wanted for a good price. Easy to follow instructions, and super quick results. Platform provides more information than my gp's ever have on the tests and what the results meant. Would like more clinics to be able to test at (specifically Capital Pathology) but there is a decent network. Will continue to use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most collection centres accept walk-ins. Some may require a booking - check details when you click on your chosen location.

If your test needs fasting, we’ll include that in your instructions after you order. Fasting usually means no food for 8–12 hours, but water is fine.

Just your pathology referral form (we email it to you)

Of course. Just maybe don’t bring the friend who faints at the sight of blood.

They’re the highly trained professionals who take your blood sample - with a steady hand and a sharp needle. They love blood, but don’t worry… they’re not vampires. Just legends who make blood tests quick, clean, and (almost) painless.

Some of our tests include Urine, Stool, Saliva and more. Each test will have a clear description on what sample you will need to give and instructions on how.
