Overview

Cystatin C is a small protein produced at a steady rate by nearly all nucleated cells. It is freely filtered by the kidneys and not significantly influenced by muscle mass, diet, age, or sex, giving it an advantage over creatinine in certain populations.

Laboratories can calculate an eGFR from cystatin C alone or combine it with creatinine in a dual-marker equation, currently considered the most accurate estimate of true kidney filtration rate available in routine practice.

Corticosteroid medications and thyroid disease can affect cystatin C levels independently of kidney function. Your practitioner will take these into account.

Symptoms

Suited to people whose creatinine-based eGFR may not accurately reflect kidney function, including older adults, those with low muscle mass, very muscular individuals, and people with obesity.

Questions

  • A protein produced at a steady rate by nearly all cells, freely filtered by the kidneys, and not affected by muscle mass.
  • Older adults, very muscular individuals, people with obesity, and those with low muscle mass from chronic illness.
  • No fasting is required.
  • Corticosteroid medications and thyroid disease.
  • Creatinine depends on muscle mass. Cystatin C is not affected by muscle mass, making it more reliable in certain populations.

How to prepare

No fasting is required. Drink water as normal. Unlike creatinine, cystatin C is not significantly affected by recent diet, exercise, or muscle mass changes. Let your practitioner know about corticosteroid medications or thyroid conditions.

After the test

Share your results with your GP or relevant specialist. Cystatin C is typically interpreted alongside creatinine and eGFR as part of a broader kidney function assessment.

Your test results will be available in your private dashboard. If there are any urgent issues, we'll let you know so you can follow up with your health professional.

Understanding results

Results are reported in milligrams per litre (mg/L). A typical adult range is approximately 0.51 to 0.98 mg/L. Higher levels indicate lower kidney filtration capacity. Cystatin C can be elevated by corticosteroid use and thyroid dysfunction independently of kidney function.

Simple health checks in my control

I didn't know that private blood tests were an option. Tried this platform as the packages suited what I wanted for a good price. Easy to follow instructions, and super quick results. Platform provides more information than my gp's ever have on the tests and what the results meant. Would like more clinics to be able to test at (specifically Capital Pathology) but there is a decent network. Will continue to use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most collection centres accept walk-ins. Some may require a booking - check details when you click on your chosen location.

If your test needs fasting, we’ll include that in your instructions after you order. Fasting usually means no food for 8–12 hours, but water is fine.

Just your pathology referral form (we email it to you)

Of course. Just maybe don’t bring the friend who faints at the sight of blood.

They’re the highly trained professionals who take your blood sample - with a steady hand and a sharp needle. They love blood, but don’t worry… they’re not vampires. Just legends who make blood tests quick, clean, and (almost) painless.

Some of our tests include Urine, Stool, Saliva and more. Each test will have a clear description on what sample you will need to give and instructions on how.
