Overview

This four-point saliva test maps your cortisol rhythm from morning through evening, revealing patterns that single blood tests miss. Cortisol should follow a predictable curve—highest at waking to energize your morning, declining through afternoon, lowest at bedtime to allow sleep.

Saliva collection captures free cortisol your cells actually use, and home collection avoids the stress response that blood draws can trigger. By measuring at 8am, noon, 4pm, and 8pm, the test reveals whether your stress hormone system is supporting or undermining your daily energy and sleep, with collection available across Australia.

Particularly useful for persistent fatigue, afternoon crashes, or sleep difficulties that don't match obvious causes.

Symptoms

Essential for people with fatigue patterns varying through the day, afternoon energy crashes, sleep difficulties, or comprehensive stress hormone assessment.

Questions

  • Single tests miss the pattern. Cortisol should be high morning, declining through day, low evening. Four points reveal whether your rhythm is healthy, flattened, or inverted.
  • Saliva measures free (active) cortisol. Blood includes protein-bound cortisol your cells can't use. Saliva also allows stress-free home collection.
  • High upon waking, declining steadily, lowest at bedtime. This supports morning energy and evening relaxation.
  • Similar levels throughout day—low energy, poor stress tolerance, difficulty both waking and sleeping. Often called 'adrenal fatigue' pattern.
  • Low morning, high evening—tired upon waking but wired at night. Sleep is particularly affected.
  • Yes, with consistent sleep timing, stress management, and sometimes targeted supplements. Recovery typically takes 3-6 months.

How to prepare

Collect saliva samples at exact times: 8AM (within 1 hour of waking), 12PM, 4PM, and 8PM. Avoid eating, drinking (except water), brushing teeth, or smoking 30 minutes before each collection. Maintain normal daily routine and stress levels.

After the test

Address cortisol imbalances through stress management, sleep optimization, targeted supplementation, dietary modifications, exercise timing, and lifestyle changes. Work with healthcare providers experienced in adrenal health for comprehensive treatment.

Your test results will be available in your private dashboard. If there are any urgent issues, we'll let you know so you can follow up with your health professional.

Understanding results

Simple health checks in my control

I didn't know that private blood tests were an option. Tried this platform as the packages suited what I wanted for a good price. Easy to follow instructions, and super quick results. Platform provides more information than my gp's ever have on the tests and what the results meant. Would like more clinics to be able to test at (specifically Capital Pathology) but there is a decent network. Will continue to use.
