Overview

Dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate (DHEAS) is the most abundant steroid hormone in the human body. It is produced almost exclusively by the adrenal glands and serves as a precursor that can be converted into both androgens and oestrogens. Because of its adrenal origin, DHEAS is a useful marker for assessing adrenal androgen production separately from ovarian or testicular sources.

DHEAS levels peak in the mid-20s and decline steadily with age. In clinical practice, DHEAS is most commonly tested in the investigation of androgen excess. In women presenting with acne, hirsutism, hair thinning, or irregular menstrual cycles, DHEAS helps determine whether the adrenal glands are contributing to elevated androgen levels.

Significantly elevated DHEAS can also point to conditions affecting the adrenal glands themselves, including congenital adrenal hyperplasia and, rarely, adrenal tumours. Your practitioner will typically interpret DHEAS alongside other androgen markers.

Symptoms

Suited to people with signs of androgen excess such as acne, hirsutism, or irregular menstrual cycles, those being investigated for PCOS, and people where an adrenal source of excess androgens is suspected.

Questions

  • DHEAS is the sulphated form and is far more stable in the bloodstream, making it the preferred marker. DHEAS is produced almost exclusively by the adrenal glands.
  • No fasting is required. DHEAS levels are relatively stable throughout the day.
  • DHEAS reflects adrenal androgen production specifically, helping determine whether the adrenal glands are contributing to androgen excess.
  • Elevated DHEAS, particularly when associated with PCOS or adrenal disorders, can be linked to hormonal imbalances that affect ovulation.
  • Yes. DHEAS peaks in your mid-20s and then declines steadily.
  • Yes. Over-the-counter DHEA supplements will raise your DHEAS level. Tell your practitioner before the test.

How to prepare

No fasting is required. Eat and drink normally beforehand. DHEAS levels are relatively stable throughout the day, so collection time is flexible.

After the test

Share your results with your GP, gynaecologist, or endocrinologist. DHEAS is rarely interpreted in isolation. It is most useful as part of a panel that may include total and free testosterone, SHBG, androstenedione, LH, and FSH.

Your test results will be available in your private dashboard. If there are any urgent issues, we'll let you know so you can follow up with your health professional.

Understanding results

Results are reported in micromoles per litre (umol/L). Reference ranges vary by sex and age, as DHEAS naturally peaks in early adulthood and declines with age.

Elevated DHEAS can point to excessive adrenal androgen production. Low DHEAS can be associated with adrenal insufficiency and is expected with normal ageing.

Your practitioner will interpret this result alongside other androgen markers.

Simple health checks in my control

I didn't know that private blood tests were an option. Tried this platform as the packages suited what I wanted for a good price. Easy to follow instructions, and super quick results. Platform provides more information than my gp's ever have on the tests and what the results meant. Would like more clinics to be able to test at (specifically Capital Pathology) but there is a decent network. Will continue to use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most collection centres accept walk-ins. Some may require a booking - check details when you click on your chosen location.

If your test needs fasting, we’ll include that in your instructions after you order. Fasting usually means no food for 8–12 hours, but water is fine.

Just your pathology referral form (we email it to you)

Of course. Just maybe don’t bring the friend who faints at the sight of blood.

They’re the highly trained professionals who take your blood sample - with a steady hand and a sharp needle. They love blood, but don’t worry… they’re not vampires. Just legends who make blood tests quick, clean, and (almost) painless.

Some of our tests include Urine, Stool, Saliva and more. Each test will have a clear description on what sample you will need to give and instructions on how.
