Hepatitis C Serology Test

$40.00 AUD

Want to check whether you have been exposed to hepatitis C, particularly if you have risk factors like past blood transfusions, tattoos, or occupational needle exposure?

Screens for hepatitis C antibodies indicating past or current HCV exposure. A positive result does not confirm active infection; follow-up HCV RNA testing is needed to determine whether the virus is still present. Often causes no symptoms, making screening important for people with risk factors.

Overview

Hepatitis C serology measures anti-HCV antibodies in your blood. These antibodies indicate your immune system has responded to the hepatitis C virus at some point, but their presence alone does not confirm an active infection. Antibodies persist even after the virus has been cleared, so a positive antibody result always requires a follow-up HCV RNA test.

Hepatitis C is often called a silent infection because up to 80% of newly infected people have no symptoms. The virus spreads through blood-to-blood contact and, if untreated, can damage the liver over decades. Modern antiviral treatments report cure rates above 95%.

Symptoms

Suited for people with risk factors for blood-borne infections, those born between 1945 and 1965, individuals with unexplained liver enzyme changes, or anyone wanting to check their hepatitis C antibody status.

Questions

  • It means your immune system has encountered the hepatitis C virus. Follow-up RNA testing determines your current status.
  • Yes. Current direct-acting antiviral medications report cure rates above 95%.
  • Typically 8 to 12 weeks after infection, though in some cases up to 6 months.
  • This group has a higher rate of hepatitis C infection due to medical procedures before universal blood screening.
  • People with current or past hepatitis C infection are generally unable to donate blood in Australia.
  • Untreated chronic hepatitis C may lead to liver scarring, liver failure, or liver cancer over decades.

How to prepare

No fasting or special preparation needed. Let the collection staff know about any relevant risk factors, current medications, and symptoms.

After the test

A positive antibody result warrants HCV RNA testing. If RNA positive, your healthcare provider can discuss current treatment options. If RNA negative, it typically indicates a past cleared infection. A negative antibody result generally needs no follow-up unless there has been a recent high-risk exposure.

Your test results will be available in your private dashboard. If there are any urgent issues, we'll let you know so you can follow up with your health professional.

Understanding results

A positive result means anti-HCV antibodies were found. This does not confirm active infection. Follow-up HCV RNA testing is needed. A negative result suggests no prior exposure, though very recent infections may not yet produce detectable antibodies.

Simple health checks in my control

I didn't know that private blood tests were an option. Tried this platform as the packages suited what I wanted for a good price. Easy to follow instructions, and super quick results. Platform provides more information than my gp's ever have on the tests and what the results meant. Would like more clinics to be able to test at (specifically Capital Pathology) but there is a decent network. Will continue to use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most collection centres accept walk-ins. Some may require a booking - check details when you click on your chosen location.

If your test needs fasting, we’ll include that in your instructions after you order. Fasting usually means no food for 8–12 hours, but water is fine.

Just your pathology referral form (we email it to you)

Of course. Just maybe don’t bring the friend who faints at the sight of blood.

They’re the highly trained professionals who take your blood sample - with a steady hand and a sharp needle. They love blood, but don’t worry… they’re not vampires. Just legends who make blood tests quick, clean, and (almost) painless.

Some of our tests include Urine, Stool, Saliva and more. Each test will have a clear description on what sample you will need to give and instructions on how.
