Overview

Hepatitis A serology measures antibodies your immune system produces in response to the Hepatitis A virus. The test checks for two types: IgM antibodies, which appear during acute or recent infection, and IgG antibodies, which persist long-term after recovery or vaccination and indicate immunity.

Hepatitis A spreads through contaminated food, water, or close contact with an infected person. While it does not cause chronic infection like Hepatitis B or C, it can cause weeks to months of illness with symptoms including fatigue, nausea, abdominal pain and jaundice.

Symptoms

Suited to travellers planning trips to endemic areas, healthcare and food service workers, people with chronic liver disease, or anyone wanting to confirm their Hepatitis A immunity status.

Questions

  • Immunity from natural infection or vaccination is generally lifelong.
  • Hepatitis A infection or successful vaccination provides lifelong immunity in most people.
  • Test 2 to 7 weeks after exposure for IgM antibodies. Post-exposure vaccination or immunoglobulin may be recommended within 2 weeks.
  • No. IgG positive indicates existing immunity.
  • The vaccine is 95 to 100 percent effective when given as a two-dose series.
  • IgM antibodies appear first during acute infection. IgG antibodies develop later and persist long-term, indicating immunity.

How to prepare

No fasting required. Let the pathology staff know about any recent vaccinations, current medications and any symptoms you are experiencing.

After the test

If both antibodies are negative, discuss Hepatitis A vaccination with your healthcare provider, especially before travel or occupational exposure. If IgM is positive, your provider can advise on supportive care and appropriate precautions. If IgG is positive without IgM, you are likely immune and no further action is needed.

Your test results will be available in your private dashboard. If there are any urgent issues, we'll let you know so you can follow up with your health professional.

Understanding results

Results show IgM and IgG antibody status. IgM positive suggests acute or recent infection. IgG positive indicates immunity from past infection or vaccination. Both negative means you are not immune and vaccination may be recommended.

Simple health checks in my control

I didn't know that private blood tests were an option. Tried this platform as the packages suited what I wanted for a good price. Easy to follow instructions, and super quick results. Platform provides more information than my gp's ever have on the tests and what the results meant. Would like more clinics to be able to test at (specifically Capital Pathology) but there is a decent network. Will continue to use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most collection centres accept walk-ins. Some may require a booking - check details when you click on your chosen location.

If your test needs fasting, we’ll include that in your instructions after you order. Fasting usually means no food for 8–12 hours, but water is fine.

Just your pathology referral form (we email it to you)

Of course. Just maybe don’t bring the friend who faints at the sight of blood.

They’re the highly trained professionals who take your blood sample - with a steady hand and a sharp needle. They love blood, but don’t worry… they’re not vampires. Just legends who make blood tests quick, clean, and (almost) painless.

Some of our tests include Urine, Stool, Saliva and more. Each test will have a clear description on what sample you will need to give and instructions on how.
