Overview

Hair Mineral Analysis Level 1 measures eight essential minerals and eight toxic metals from a hair sample collected at home. Hair reflects what your body accumulated or excreted during the 2 to 3 months of growth, providing different information than blood testing.

Blood tightly regulates mineral levels, often pulling from tissue stores to maintain normal circulation. Hair, as a storage tissue, reflects longer-term trends. This makes hair analysis useful for identifying chronic mineral deficiencies or toxic metal exposures that may not show up on a standard blood test.

Essential minerals tested include calcium, chromium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, selenium and zinc. Toxic metals include silver, aluminium, arsenic, cadmium, mercury, nickel, lead and tin.

Symptoms

Suited to people with unexplained fatigue or cognitive symptoms, those concerned about toxic metal exposure from their environment or workplace, or anyone wanting mineral status assessment beyond what blood testing provides.

Questions

  • Hair reflects mineral status over 2 to 3 months rather than a single moment. It better shows chronic accumulation patterns and can reveal mineral depletion or toxic exposure that blood tests normalise quickly.
  • Essential minerals: calcium, chromium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, selenium, zinc. Toxic metals: silver, aluminium, arsenic, cadmium, mercury, nickel, lead, tin.
  • Common sources include contaminated water, seafood, dental amalgams, cosmetics, smoking, and occupational exposure.
  • Perms, dyes and bleaches can alter mineral content. Use untreated hair, or wait 6 to 8 weeks after chemical treatment.
  • Approximately 1 gram cut close to the scalp from the back of the head.
  • Level 1 tests 8 essential minerals and 8 toxic metals. Level 2 tests 17 of each for a more detailed assessment.

How to prepare

Collect a hair sample from the back of your head near the nape of the neck using the provided scissors. Cut hair as close to the scalp as possible. Collect approximately 1 gram (about a tablespoon) of hair. Avoid chemically treated hair if possible, or wait 6 to 8 weeks after treatment. Kit includes full collection and shipping instructions.

After the test

Discuss results with a healthcare provider experienced in mineral assessment. They can recommend targeted supplementation, dietary changes or further investigation based on your results. For elevated toxic metals, identifying and reducing exposure sources is the first step. Follow-up testing can track changes over time.

Your test results will be available in your private dashboard. If there are any urgent issues, we'll let you know so you can follow up with your health professional.

Understanding results

Results show levels of all 16 elements compared to reference ranges. Mineral deficiencies, excesses, or elevated toxic metals are flagged. Your healthcare provider can use these results alongside your symptoms and any blood test data to guide targeted nutritional support or further investigation into toxic exposures.

Simple health checks in my control

I didn't know that private blood tests were an option. Tried this platform as the packages suited what I wanted for a good price. Easy to follow instructions, and super quick results. Platform provides more information than my gp's ever have on the tests and what the results meant. Would like more clinics to be able to test at (specifically Capital Pathology) but there is a decent network. Will continue to use.
