Overview

The Gold Blood Test measures the concentration of gold in your blood. Most people have negligible gold levels, so this test is primarily relevant in two situations: monitoring gold-based medical treatment and assessing occupational exposure.

Gold compounds (such as auranofin or sodium aurothiomalate) have been used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, though newer medications have largely replaced them. For people still receiving gold therapy, regular blood monitoring is important because gold accumulates in tissues over time and has a narrow range between therapeutic and toxic levels. Elevated gold can affect the kidneys, blood cells, skin and liver.

Occupational exposure may occur in mining, jewellery manufacturing, electronics production and dental work. For workers in these industries, periodic testing helps catch accumulation before symptoms develop.

Symptoms

Suited to people receiving gold therapy for rheumatoid arthritis, workers with occupational gold exposure in mining, jewellery or electronics, or anyone needing toxicity assessment after gold exposure.

How to prepare

No fasting required. Let the pathology staff know about any gold-containing medications and any recent dental work or occupational exposures involving gold. Blood sample collected at a pathology centre.

After the test

Your healthcare provider can advise on next steps based on your results. For people on gold therapy, dose adjustments or more frequent monitoring may be recommended. Elevated levels in occupational settings may prompt workplace exposure review. Report any new symptoms such as skin changes, mouth sores or changes in urine to your doctor.

Your test results will be available in your private dashboard. If there are any urgent issues, we'll let you know so you can follow up with your health professional.

Understanding results

Results show the gold concentration in your blood. Your result report includes the reference range that applies to your sample, and your practitioner can explain what your number means in the context of your treatment. Levels above this range may indicate increased risk of side effects. For occupational screening, any significant elevation above baseline warrants investigation. Your healthcare provider can interpret results based on your treatment plan or exposure history.
