Overview

The Lead Blood Test measures your blood lead level (BLL), the standard way to assess recent and ongoing lead exposure.

Lead enters the body through ingestion and inhalation. In Australia, common sources include deteriorating lead paint in homes built before 1970, lead-containing pipes and plumbing solder, occupational dust and fumes (battery manufacturing, smelting, mining, construction, radiator repair, stained glass, and some ceramic glazes), lead shot and fishing sinkers, and some traditional cosmetics and medicines.

Blood lead reflects recent and ongoing exposure. Lead that has accumulated in bone over years is not fully captured by a blood test alone.

Symptoms

This test suits you if you live in or are renovating a pre-1970s home and are concerned about lead paint or plumbing, you work in an industry with lead exposure, you have a child with known or suspected lead exposure, you want a baseline measurement before beginning renovation work on an older property, or your practitioner has requested lead testing.

Questions

  • It measures blood lead level (BLL), the standard measure for assessing recent and ongoing lead exposure.
  • No safe level of blood lead has been established. In Australia, the reference value for adults is 0.48 umol/L (10 ug/dL). For children, concern is warranted at lower levels.
  • Yes. Blood lead testing is recommended for children with known or suspected lead exposure.
  • Lead paint in homes built before 1970, lead-containing pipes, lead-contaminated soil, and dust generated during renovation.
  • Share your result with your doctor. They will focus on identifying and eliminating the source of ongoing exposure.

How to prepare

No fasting is required. You can eat and drink normally before your blood draw. This is a standard blood draw test.

After the test

Share your results with your doctor. If your level is elevated, your practitioner will focus on identifying and reducing the source of ongoing exposure. They may recommend follow-up testing to confirm whether levels are trending down.

If your result is within the reference range, it provides a useful baseline.

Your test results will be available in your private dashboard. If there are any urgent issues, we'll let you know so you can follow up with your health professional.

Understanding results

Your result shows your blood lead concentration. There is no established safe blood lead level. In Australia, the reference value for adults is 0.48 umol/L (10 ug/dL) or lower. For children, action is recommended at 5 ug/dL or above.

A result above the reference value warrants discussion with your healthcare practitioner.

Simple health checks in my control

I didn't know that private blood tests were an option. Tried this platform as the packages suited what I wanted for a good price. Easy to follow instructions, and super quick results. Platform provides more information than my gp's ever have on the tests and what the results meant. Would like more clinics to be able to test at (specifically Capital Pathology) but there is a decent network. Will continue to use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most collection centres accept walk-ins. Some may require a booking - check details when you click on your chosen location.

If your test needs fasting, we’ll include that in your instructions after you order. Fasting usually means no food for 8–12 hours, but water is fine.

Just your pathology referral form (we email it to you)

Of course. Just maybe don’t bring the friend who faints at the sight of blood.

They’re the highly trained professionals who take your blood sample - with a steady hand and a sharp needle. They love blood, but don’t worry… they’re not vampires. Just legends who make blood tests quick, clean, and (almost) painless.

Some of our tests include Urine, Stool, Saliva and more. Each test will have a clear description on what sample you will need to give and instructions on how.
