Overview

The Faecal Occult Blood Test screens for hidden bleeding in your digestive tract that could indicate colorectal cancer, polyps, or other conditions. Available as an at-home kit across Australia, it provides an accessible first-line screening option recommended for adults over 45.

Colorectal cancer is highly treatable when caught early. Pre-cancerous polyps and early cancers often bleed small amounts into the stool—invisible to the eye but detectable through laboratory analysis. This test uses both chemical and immunological methods to identify blood, reducing false positives from dietary sources.

Regular screening saves lives. For Australians at average risk, annual FOBT combined with colonoscopy every 10 years (or sooner if FOBT is positive) represents current best practice. Those with family history of bowel cancer should discuss enhanced screening schedules with their doctor.

Symptoms

Essential for adults over 45 for routine colorectal cancer screening, those with family history of bowel cancer, or anyone with unexplained digestive symptoms or anaemia.

Questions

  • Cancers and pre-cancerous polyps often bleed small amounts into the digestive tract. By detecting this hidden blood, the test identifies people who need colonoscopy for definitive diagnosis.
  • Red meat, certain vegetables, vitamin C, aspirin, and NSAIDs can cause false positives. Bleeding hemorrhoids and gum disease may also cause positive results unrelated to bowel disease.
  • Positive results require colonoscopy to identify the bleeding source. Most positive tests are caused by benign conditions like hemorrhoids or polyps rather than cancer.
  • Annual testing is recommended for average-risk adults aged 45-75. Those with family history or previous polyps may need more frequent screening or direct colonoscopy.
  • Colonoscopy remains the gold standard, directly visualizing the bowel and removing polyps. FOBT is a convenient screening tool—positive results still require colonoscopy for diagnosis.
  • Bleeding from polyps and cancers can be intermittent. Testing multiple samples from different bowel movements increases the chance of detecting blood when present.

How to prepare

Avoid red meat, vitamin C supplements, and NSAIDs for 3 days before collection as they can cause false results. Collect samples from 3 different bowel movements as directed. Avoid collection during menstruation or if you have bleeding hemorrhoids. Follow kit instructions carefully.

After the test

Positive results require immediate follow-up with gastroenterologist for colonoscopy to identify bleeding source. Negative results with ongoing symptoms may require repeat testing or alternative investigations. Continue routine screening as recommended.

Your test results will be available in your private dashboard. If there are any urgent issues, we'll let you know so you can follow up with your health professional.

Understanding results

Results show positive or negative for occult blood. Positive results indicate presence of hidden blood requiring further investigation with colonoscopy or other imaging. Negative results suggest no significant bleeding detected at time of testing.

Simple health checks in my control

I didn't know that private blood tests were an option. Tried this platform as the packages suited what I wanted for a good price. Easy to follow instructions, and super quick results. Platform provides more information than my gp's ever have on the tests and what the results meant. Would like more clinics to be able to test at (specifically Capital Pathology) but there is a decent network. Will continue to use.
