Overview

This urine test measures mycotoxin levels to screen for mould toxin exposure. Mycotoxins are toxic compounds produced by certain mould species that can accumulate in the body when you are exposed to contaminated environments, particularly water-damaged buildings.

The panel uses LC-MS/MS technology to screen for specific mycotoxins including ochratoxin A, aflatoxins, trichothecenes, and several others.

This test is commonly used by people with unexplained chronic symptoms, those with a history of living or working in water-damaged buildings, and anyone investigating whether mould exposure may be a contributing factor.

Symptoms

To measure urinary mycotoxin levels in people with suspected mould exposure, chronic unexplained symptoms, or a history of living or working in water-damaged environments.

Questions

  • Mycotoxins are toxic compounds produced by certain mould species. They can be inhaled, ingested, or absorbed through skin contact.
  • Most commonly through inhaling airborne mycotoxins in water-damaged buildings. Also through contaminated food or direct contact with mouldy materials.
  • Chronic fatigue, brain fog, respiratory issues, neurological symptoms, immune dysfunction, and digestive problems are commonly reported.
  • The body does have natural clearance mechanisms. Your practitioner can discuss strategies to support this process.
  • Testing can be done at any time, but ongoing exposure may affect interpretation.
  • A home inspection checks your environment. This test checks whether mycotoxins are present in your body.

How to prepare

Collect a first morning urine sample using the sterile container provided. If possible, avoid antifungal medications or supplements for 48 hours before collection. Follow the kit instructions for proper collection and shipping.

After the test

Share your results with a practitioner experienced in environmental medicine or mould-related illness. If mycotoxin levels are elevated, identifying and addressing the source of exposure is an important first step.

Your test results will be available in your private dashboard. If there are any urgent issues, we'll let you know so you can follow up with your health professional.

Understanding results

Results report levels of individual mycotoxins compared to reference ranges. Elevated levels may suggest recent or ongoing mould toxin exposure. The specific mycotoxins found can give your practitioner clues about the type of mould involved.

Simple health checks in my control

I didn't know that private blood tests were an option. Tried this platform as the packages suited what I wanted for a good price. Easy to follow instructions, and super quick results. Platform provides more information than my gp's ever have on the tests and what the results meant. Would like more clinics to be able to test at (specifically Capital Pathology) but there is a decent network. Will continue to use.
