Overview

CMV serology measures whether you have been exposed to cytomegalovirus and developed immunity. This is most relevant for pregnancy planning and managing immunocompromised conditions.

The test reports two antibody types. IgG indicates past infection and lasting immunity. IgM suggests a recent or active infection. Most adults acquire CMV without symptoms and carry it dormant for life.

For pregnancy planning, knowing your CMV status allows you and your practitioner to take appropriate precautions if you are susceptible, since a primary infection during pregnancy can affect foetal development.

Symptoms

To measure CMV antibody levels and determine immune status, particularly for pregnancy planning, transplant evaluation, or assessing occupational exposure risk in healthcare and childcare settings.

Questions

  • Cytomegalovirus is a common herpes-family virus. Most adults have been exposed without knowing it. After the initial infection, the virus remains dormant for life.
  • A primary CMV infection during pregnancy can affect foetal development, potentially causing hearing loss, vision problems, or developmental delays.
  • It indicates past exposure and existing immunity.
  • It suggests a recent or active infection. In pregnancy, this typically warrants further evaluation.
  • Through body fluids including saliva, urine, blood, and breast milk.
  • Frequent handwashing, avoiding sharing food or drinks with young children, and minimising contact with children's saliva and urine.

How to prepare

No special preparation required. Fasting is not needed. Let your practitioner know if you are pregnant, immunocompromised, or taking medications that affect immune function.

After the test

Share your results with your GP or specialist. If you are susceptible and planning a pregnancy, your practitioner can advise on precautions. If IgM is positive, further monitoring may be recommended.

Your test results will be available in your private dashboard. If there are any urgent issues, we'll let you know so you can follow up with your health professional.

Understanding results

Results report IgG and IgM antibody levels. Both negative means no previous exposure and susceptibility to CMV. Positive IgG with negative IgM indicates past infection and existing immunity. Positive IgM suggests a recent or active infection.

Simple health checks in my control

I didn't know that private blood tests were an option. Tried this platform as the packages suited what I wanted for a good price. Easy to follow instructions, and super quick results. Platform provides more information than my gp's ever have on the tests and what the results meant. Would like more clinics to be able to test at (specifically Capital Pathology) but there is a decent network. Will continue to use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most collection centres accept walk-ins. Some may require a booking - check details when you click on your chosen location.

If your test needs fasting, we’ll include that in your instructions after you order. Fasting usually means no food for 8–12 hours, but water is fine.

Just your pathology referral form (we email it to you)

Of course. Just maybe don’t bring the friend who faints at the sight of blood.

They’re the highly trained professionals who take your blood sample - with a steady hand and a sharp needle. They love blood, but don’t worry… they’re not vampires. Just legends who make blood tests quick, clean, and (almost) painless.

Some of our tests include Urine, Stool, Saliva and more. Each test will have a clear description on what sample you will need to give and instructions on how.
