Overview

CoQ10 is a fat-soluble compound found in the mitochondria of every cell. It has two main roles: generating ATP (the molecule your cells use for energy) and acting as an antioxidant to protect cell membranes from oxidative damage. Your body produces CoQ10 naturally, but production declines with age.

Low levels have been associated with fatigue, muscle weakness, reduced exercise tolerance, poor recovery and cognitive sluggishness. Statin medications, which are widely prescribed for cholesterol management, are known to reduce CoQ10 production as a side effect. This test measures your circulating CoQ10 from a dried blood spot sample. Your results can help your practitioner determine whether supplementation is warranted, particularly if you are on statins, experiencing unexplained fatigue, or looking to optimise energy and recovery.

Symptoms

This test assesses your CoQ10 status, which reflects mitochondrial energy production and antioxidant capacity. It may be relevant if you experience fatigue, muscle weakness, reduced exercise tolerance, poor mood or headaches. It is particularly useful for people taking statin medications, those with cardiovascular concerns, or anyone investigating persistent low energy.

Questions

  • It measures blood levels of CoQ10, a key antioxidant involved in energy production.
  • Low levels may be linked to fatigue, aging, or statin use.
  • Yes. Statins can reduce CoQ10 levels.
  • No fasting is needed.
  • Every 3–6 months when adjusting supplementation.

How to prepare

1. Prepare Your Kit
Wash your hands with warm water and dry them thoroughly. Lay out your kit contents on a clean surface. Warming your hands and shaking them gently can help increase blood flow for easier collection.

2. Collect Your Sample
Use the provided lancet to perform a quick finger prick. Allow one or more drops of blood to fall onto the designated circles on the dried blood spot card. Ensure the circles are fully saturated, but avoid touching the card with your fingers.

3. Let It Dry
Allow your blood spot sample to dry completely at room temperature before packaging. Do not cover or seal the card until dry.

4. Pack and Return
Once dry, place the card and all components back into the return envelope provided. Seal and mail it using the pre-paid return label.

After the test

Share your results with a qualified practitioner who can assess them alongside your medications, symptoms and health history. They can advise on whether CoQ10 supplementation, dietary changes or further testing may be appropriate.

Your test results will be available in your private dashboard. If there are any urgent issues, we'll let you know so you can follow up with your health professional.

Understanding results

Your results show your circulating CoQ10 level. Levels within the reference range suggest adequate mitochondrial energy support and antioxidant capacity. Low levels may reflect age-related decline, medication effects (particularly statins), increased oxidative demand or insufficient dietary intake. Your practitioner can interpret your result alongside your medications, symptoms and health goals.

Simple health checks in my control

I didn't know that private blood tests were an option. Tried this platform as the packages suited what I wanted for a good price. Easy to follow instructions, and super quick results. Platform provides more information than my gp's ever have on the tests and what the results meant. Would like more clinics to be able to test at (specifically Capital Pathology) but there is a decent network. Will continue to use.
