C-Reactive Protein (CRP) Blood Test

$38.00 AUD

Been feeling run down for weeks with no clear explanation, or want to check whether there's an active inflammatory process going on in your body?

Measures C-reactive protein (CRP), a protein released by the liver in response to inflammation. Levels rise with infection, autoimmune flares, injury and tissue damage. A broad inflammatory marker used across a wide range of clinical investigations.

Overview

Think of the CRP test as your body's inflammation detector – it measures a special protein that acts like an internal alarm system, alerting you when something's not quite right. When your body encounters an infection, injury, or other threat, your liver quickly produces C-reactive protein (CRP) as part of your immune system's response, much like how a smoke detector sounds when it senses danger.

This simple blood test reveals whether inflammation is present in your body and how active it might be. Elevated CRP levels can indicate anything from a common infection to chronic conditions like arthritis or autoimmune diseases, while normal levels suggest your body isn't currently fighting any significant inflammatory battles. Whether you're experiencing unexplained symptoms like persistent fatigue or joint pain, monitoring a known inflammatory condition, or recovering from surgery, the CRP test gives you and your healthcare provider valuable insight into what's happening beneath the surface, helping guide treatment decisions and track your progress toward better health.

Symptoms

This test is used to detect significant inflammation in the body. It can help identify active infection, an autoimmune flare, or assess recovery after surgery or illness. Because CRP rises and falls relatively quickly, it's also useful for tracking whether inflammation is resolving over time.

Questions

  • Standard CRP detects moderate to high levels of inflammation. High-sensitivity CRP (hs-CRP) uses a more precise assay to measure low-level inflammation, and is specifically used to assess cardiovascular risk. For infection or autoimmune flares, standard CRP is appropriate.
  • Yes. Intense exercise causes temporary muscle damage and inflammation, which can raise CRP for 24-72 hours. For the most accurate baseline result, avoid strenuous exercise for a day or two before testing.
  • No. CRP confirms that inflammation is present but doesn't identify its source. Your practitioner will use it alongside your symptoms and other tests to find the cause.
  • CRP begins rising within a few hours of an inflammatory trigger and can peak within 48 hours. It falls fairly quickly once the cause resolves, making it a useful marker for monitoring acute conditions.
  • Yes. Some chronic low-grade inflammatory conditions may not elevate standard CRP above the detection threshold. High-sensitivity CRP may be more useful in those cases.

How to prepare

No fasting required. Eat and drink normally. Note that recent exercise, illness, or injury in the days before your test can temporarily raise CRP levels — mention this to your practitioner when reviewing results.

After the test

Take your result to your GP. A high CRP on its own narrows the field but doesn't pinpoint a cause. Your doctor will assess it alongside your symptoms and medical history, and may order additional tests to find out what's driving the inflammation.

Your test results will be available in your private dashboard. If there are any urgent issues, we'll let you know so you can follow up with your health professional.

Understanding results

- CRP is reported in mg/L. Standard reference ranges vary slightly between labs.
- Mildly elevated levels can occur after exercise, minor illness, or with low-grade chronic inflammation.
- Significantly elevated levels suggest a more substantial inflammatory process — such as infection, an autoimmune flare, or acute injury.
- CRP does not identify the source of inflammation. Follow-up investigation by a practitioner is needed to determine the cause.

Simple health checks in my control

I didn't know that private blood tests were an option. Tried this platform as the packages suited what I wanted for a good price. Easy to follow instructions, and super quick results. Platform provides more information than my gp's ever have on the tests and what the results meant. Would like more clinics to be able to test at (specifically Capital Pathology) but there is a decent network. Will continue to use.

Most collection centres accept walk-ins. Some may require a booking - check details when you click on your chosen location.

If your test needs fasting, we’ll include that in your instructions after you order. Fasting usually means no food for 8–12 hours, but water is fine.

Just your pathology referral form (we email it to you)

Of course. Just maybe don’t bring the friend who faints at the sight of blood.

They’re the highly trained professionals who take your blood sample - with a steady hand and a sharp needle. They love blood, but don’t worry… they’re not vampires. Just legends who make blood tests quick, clean, and (almost) painless.

Some of our tests include Urine, Stool, Saliva and more. Each test will have a clear description on what sample you will need to give and instructions on how.
