Arsenic Blood Test

$84.32 AUD

Concerned about arsenic exposure from your diet, water supply, or workplace?

Measures arsenic in the blood, reflecting recent exposure from dietary, occupational or environmental sources. Most relevant for people with occupational arsenic contact, those using bore or well water in affected areas, and high consumers of rice or seafood.

Overview

The Arsenic Blood Test measures the concentration of arsenic in your blood, reflecting your recent exposure to this element from dietary, environmental, or occupational sources.

Arsenic occurs naturally in the environment and enters the body mainly through food and water. Rice is a significant dietary source because the plant absorbs arsenic from soil readily. Seafood, particularly shellfish and bottom-feeding fish, also contains arsenic, much of it in an organic form that is less toxic than inorganic arsenic. Private bore water and well water in some parts of Australia can contain elevated inorganic arsenic.

Occupational exposure occurs in industries such as mining, smelting, glass manufacturing, pesticide production, and wood preservation. People in these fields may be monitored regularly.

Blood arsenic is most useful for detecting recent or ongoing exposure. For assessment of longer-term or lower-level exposure, urine arsenic testing may be more informative. Your practitioner can advise which test is most appropriate for your situation.

Symptoms

This test suits you if you have occupational exposure to arsenic (mining, smelting, glass manufacturing, pesticide or wood preservation industries), drink water from private bores or wells in areas with known elevated arsenic, consume large amounts of rice, shellfish, or bottom-feeding seafood regularly, have symptoms your practitioner suspects may relate to arsenic exposure, or want a baseline measurement before starting or during an occupational health monitoring programme.

Questions

  • It measures total arsenic in your blood. This reflects recent exposure from dietary, environmental, and occupational sources.
  • Yes. Seafood, especially shellfish and bottom-feeding fish, contains organic arsenic (arsenobetaine) that will show up on a total blood arsenic test. If accurate assessment of occupational or environmental inorganic arsenic is needed, avoid large servings of seafood for two to three days before your test.
  • Organic arsenic (found mainly in seafood) is largely non-toxic and passes through the body quickly. Inorganic arsenic (found in contaminated water, soil, and some industrial settings) is the form associated with health risks from prolonged exposure. A total blood arsenic test measures both. If the result is elevated, your practitioner may request speciation testing to distinguish between the two.
  • Rice can contribute to inorganic arsenic intake, particularly in people who eat large amounts daily. The level of concern depends on the type of rice, where it was grown, and how much you eat. If you have specific concerns about dietary arsenic from rice, mention this to your practitioner when reviewing results.
  • Share your result with a healthcare practitioner. They will consider your dietary habits, water source, and occupational history to determine whether the elevation is clinically significant and whether further testing or action is needed.

How to prepare

No fasting is required for this test. However, because seafood contains arsenic (particularly organic arsenic from shellfish and fish), high seafood consumption in the 48 to 72 hours before testing can temporarily elevate your blood arsenic reading. If accurate occupational or inorganic arsenic assessment is the goal, avoid large servings of seafood for two to three days before your blood draw and note your usual dietary habits on any forms provided.

This is a standard blood draw test. A small sample of blood is taken from a vein in your arm at the pathology centre.

After the test

Share your results with your doctor or a healthcare practitioner experienced in occupational health or environmental medicine. They can assess whether your arsenic level is clinically significant given your individual exposure history and diet.

If your result is elevated after accounting for seafood intake, your practitioner may investigate the source of exposure and consider further testing, including speciated arsenic testing to identify whether the arsenic is organic or inorganic.

If your result is within the reference range, it provides a useful baseline, particularly if you have ongoing occupational exposure or live in an area with elevated environmental arsenic.

Your test results will be available in your private dashboard. If there are any urgent issues, we'll let you know so you can follow up with your health professional.

Understanding results

Your result shows your blood arsenic concentration measured against the reference range for people without known excessive exposure.

A result within the reference range is consistent with typical background dietary and environmental exposure. Elevated results indicate higher arsenic than expected and may reflect recent occupational exposure, high dietary intake (particularly seafood consumed close to the test), contaminated water consumption, or other sources.

It is important to note that organic arsenic from seafood (arsenobetaine) is largely non-toxic and will still register on a total arsenic blood test. If your result is elevated and you consumed seafood recently, your practitioner may request arsenic speciation testing to distinguish between organic and inorganic forms, or ask you to retest after avoiding seafood.

Share your results with a qualified healthcare practitioner who can review them in the context of your dietary habits, exposure history, and any symptoms.

Simple health checks in my control

I didn't know that private blood tests were an option. Tried this platform as the packages suited what I wanted for a good price. Easy to follow instructions, and super quick results. Platform provides more information than my gp's ever have on the tests and what the results meant. Would like more clinics to be able to test at (specifically Capital Pathology) but there is a decent network. Will continue to use.

Of course. Just maybe don’t bring the friend who faints at the sight of blood.

They’re the highly trained professionals who take your blood sample - with a steady hand and a sharp needle. They love blood, but don’t worry… they’re not vampires. Just legends who make blood tests quick, clean, and (almost) painless.

Some of our tests include Urine, Stool, Saliva and more. Each test will have a clear description on what sample you will need to give and instructions on how.
