Aluminium Blood Test

$54.50 AUD

Worried about aluminium exposure from work, diet, or dialysis treatment?

Measures aluminium in the blood to assess recent exposure. Most relevant for people on long-term dialysis, those with occupational exposure in mining, smelting, welding or ceramics, and anyone with concerns about accumulation from medications or environmental sources.

Overview

The Aluminium Blood Test measures serum aluminium, giving you and your practitioner a snapshot of your current circulating aluminium levels.

Aluminium enters the body through food, drinking water, medications (particularly antacids and buffered aspirin), occupational dust and fumes, and certain cookware or packaging. In most people, the kidneys clear aluminium effectively. In people with reduced kidney function, particularly those undergoing dialysis, clearance is impaired and levels can build up over time.

This test is commonly used to monitor dialysis patients, assess occupational exposure in people who work with aluminium compounds, and investigate symptoms that a practitioner suspects may relate to elevated metal levels. It can also provide reassurance for people concerned about everyday exposure sources like cookware or antiperspirants.

The test measures serum (blood) aluminium. It does not measure aluminium stored in bone or tissue. If your practitioner suspects longer-term accumulation, they may request additional investigations alongside this test.

Symptoms

This test suits you if you work in an industry with aluminium exposure (mining, smelting, welding, construction, ceramics), are on long-term dialysis and your practitioner monitors your metal levels regularly, take aluminium-containing medications such as antacids over an extended period, have concerns about aluminium exposure from cookware, water, or other everyday sources, or your practitioner has requested aluminium testing as part of a broader investigation.

Questions

  • It measures the concentration of aluminium in your blood (serum aluminium). This reflects your current circulating aluminium levels rather than long-term accumulation in bone or tissue.
  • People on long-term dialysis, those with occupational exposure to aluminium (mining, welding, smelting, ceramics), people taking aluminium-containing medications over extended periods, and anyone whose practitioner suspects elevated aluminium levels.
  • No. You can eat and drink normally before your blood draw.
  • For most people with normal kidney function, everyday aluminium exposure from cookware, antiperspirants, and food is cleared efficiently. Testing can provide reassurance or a baseline if you have specific concerns. Your practitioner can help interpret what your result means for your situation.
  • Share the result with your healthcare practitioner. They will review it alongside your exposure history, kidney function, and any symptoms to determine whether further investigation or follow-up testing is needed.

How to prepare

No fasting is required for this test. You can eat and drink normally beforehand.

This is a blood draw test, so a small sample of blood will be taken from a vein in your arm at the pathology centre. The collection takes a few minutes.

If you take aluminium-containing medications (such as antacids), let the collection staff know and note them on any relevant forms. Your practitioner may advise whether to take these before or after the blood draw.

After the test

Share your results with your doctor or a healthcare practitioner. They can assess whether your aluminium level is clinically relevant given your exposure history, kidney function, and any symptoms you're experiencing.

If your level is elevated, your practitioner may investigate possible sources, recommend ways to reduce ongoing exposure, or arrange follow-up testing to track whether levels change over time.

If your result is within the reference range, it provides a useful baseline, particularly if you have ongoing occupational exposure or are monitored as a dialysis patient.

Your test results will be available in your private dashboard. If there are any urgent issues, we'll let you know so you can follow up with your health professional.

Understanding results

Your result shows your serum aluminium concentration, measured against a reference range for the general population.

A result within the reference range suggests your circulating aluminium level is typical. A result above the reference range indicates higher aluminium in your blood than expected, which may reflect recent or ongoing exposure, reduced clearance (as seen in kidney disease or dialysis), or accumulation over time.

The significance of an elevated result depends on the context: your symptoms, kidney function, occupational history, and medication use all affect how the result should be interpreted. A single elevated reading does not confirm toxicity or disease.

Share your results with a qualified healthcare practitioner who can review them alongside your full clinical picture and recommend any next steps.

Simple health checks in my control

I didn't know that private blood tests were an option. Tried this platform as the packages suited what I wanted for a good price. Easy to follow instructions, and super quick results. Platform provides more information than my gp's ever have on the tests and what the results meant. Would like more clinics to be able to test at (specifically Capital Pathology) but there is a decent network. Will continue to use.

Of course. Just maybe don’t bring the friend who faints at the sight of blood.

They’re the highly trained professionals who take your blood sample - with a steady hand and a sharp needle. They love blood, but don’t worry… they’re not vampires. Just legends who make blood tests quick, clean, and (almost) painless.

Some of our tests include Urine, Stool, Saliva and more. Each test will have a clear description on what sample you will need to give and instructions on how.
