Urine Micro/Culture/Sensitivities (Urine MCS) UTI Test

$72.00 AUD

Experiencing burning, urgency or changes in your urine and want to find out exactly what is causing your symptoms?

A urine MCS test examines a urine sample for signs of infection through three stages: microscopy (checks for inflammation markers), culture (identifies any bacteria present), and sensitivity testing (determines which antibiotics will be effective).

Overview

A urine MCS works in three stages. First, microscopy examines the sample under magnification, looking for white blood cells, red blood cells, crystals and bacteria. Second, the culture step grows organisms to identify the exact species. Third, sensitivity testing exposes the identified bacteria to a panel of antibiotics to determine which ones are effective.

This targeted approach matters because antibiotic resistance is increasingly common.

Symptoms

Commonly ordered when you are experiencing urinary symptoms such as burning during urination, increased frequency, urgency, cloudy or strong-smelling urine, or pelvic discomfort. Also used to monitor recurrent UTIs or confirm treatment effectiveness.

Questions

  • Midstream collection reduces contamination from skin bacteria.
  • Persistent symptoms may indicate antibiotic resistance, reinfection or an underlying condition.
  • Mixed flora usually indicates the sample was contaminated. A repeat collection is typically recommended.
  • Do not stop prescribed antibiotics without medical advice. Where possible, collect the sample before starting a new course.
  • Yes. Use the sterile container provided and deliver within two hours, or refrigerate.
  • A dipstick gives a quick screening result. An MCS provides a definitive culture identifying the exact organism and which antibiotics will work.

How to prepare

Collect a midstream urine sample to reduce contamination from surrounding skin. Clean the genital area with the provided wipes before collection. Begin urinating, then catch the midstream portion in the sterile container. Deliver to the laboratory within two hours, or refrigerate if a delay is unavoidable.

After the test

If an infection is confirmed, your healthcare provider can use the sensitivity results to select the most appropriate antibiotic. Follow-up testing may be recommended for complicated or recurrent infections.

Your test results will be available in your private dashboard. If there are any urgent issues, we'll let you know so you can follow up with your health professional.

Understanding results

Microscopy results show the number of white blood cells, red blood cells and epithelial cells per high-power field. Growth above 100,000 CFU/mL may suggest a urinary tract infection. Sensitivity results indicate whether each antibiotic is effective (S), resistant (R) or intermediate (I).

Simple health checks in my control

I didn't know that private blood tests were an option. Tried this platform as the packages suited what I wanted for a good price. Easy to follow instructions, and super quick results. Platform provides more information than my gp's ever have on the tests and what the results meant. Would like more clinics to be able to test at (specifically Capital Pathology) but there is a decent network. Will continue to use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most collection centres accept walk-ins. Some may require a booking - check details when you click on your chosen location.

If your test needs fasting, we’ll include that in your instructions after you order. Fasting usually means no food for 8–12 hours, but water is fine.

Just your pathology referral form (we email it to you)

Of course. Just maybe don’t bring the friend who faints at the sight of blood.

They’re the highly trained professionals who take your blood sample - with a steady hand and a sharp needle. They love blood, but don’t worry… they’re not vampires. Just legends who make blood tests quick, clean, and (almost) painless.

Some of our tests include Urine, Stool, Saliva and more. Each test will have a clear description on what sample you will need to give and instructions on how.
