Overview

This test measures both essential minerals and toxic elements in a single urine sample. On the essential side, it measures iodine (needed for thyroid function) and selenium (supports antioxidant enzymes and thyroid hormone conversion). On the toxic side, it measures arsenic, mercury, cadmium, and bromine.

Bromine is worth noting because it competes with iodine for thyroid uptake. High bromine relative to iodine can impair thyroid function even when iodine intake appears adequate.

Symptoms

Useful for assessing mineral status and toxic element exposure in one test. Relevant for people with thyroid concerns, those investigating potential environmental exposures, or anyone on a restrictive diet.

Questions

  • Iodine and selenium.
  • Arsenic, mercury, cadmium, and bromine.
  • Bromine competes with iodine for thyroid uptake. High bromine relative to iodine can impair thyroid function.
  • Seafood contains organic forms of arsenic and mercury that can temporarily elevate readings.
  • Recent food and supplement intake, water source, environmental exposure, and your body's elimination capacity.
  • Urine and blood provide different information. Each has specific uses depending on what your provider is investigating.

How to prepare

No special preparation required. Collect a first morning urine sample for the most accurate results. Avoid seafood for 48 hours before collection, as it can affect mercury and arsenic readings.

After the test

If essential minerals are low, your healthcare provider may suggest dietary changes or supplementation. If toxic elements are elevated, your provider can help identify possible exposure sources.

Your test results will be available in your private dashboard. If there are any urgent issues, we'll let you know so you can follow up with your health professional.

Understanding results

Optimal iodine levels are generally 100 to 200 ug/L and selenium 20 to 50 ug/L. For toxic elements, reference levels are typically below 10 ug/L for arsenic, below 5 ug/L for mercury, and below 2 ug/L for cadmium.

Simple health checks in my control

I didn't know that private blood tests were an option. Tried this platform as the packages suited what I wanted for a good price. Easy to follow instructions, and super quick results. Platform provides more information than my gp's ever have on the tests and what the results meant. Would like more clinics to be able to test at (specifically Capital Pathology) but there is a decent network. Will continue to use.
