Simple health checks in my control

I didn't know that private blood tests were an option. Tried this platform as the packages suited what I wanted for a good price. Easy to follow instructions, and super quick results. Platform provides more information than my gp's ever have on the tests and what the results meant. Would like more clinics to be able to test at (specifically Capital Pathology) but there is a decent network. Will continue to use.

Calcium Blood Test

Overview

Think of sodium as your body's master water manager – it's the mineral that decides where fluids go and how they're distributed throughout your system. The Sodium test measures the levels of this essential mineral in your blood, giving you insight into how well your body is balancing fluids, supporting nerve communication, and keeping your muscles (including your heart) working properly. Just like a skilled conductor directing an orchestra, sodium orchestrates the movement of water in and out of your cells while ensuring your nerves can send clear signals and your muscles can contract smoothly.

When your sodium levels are off-balance, your body sends warning signals like dizziness, muscle weakness, confusion, or changes in blood pressure – think of these as your internal alarm system alerting you that your fluid management system needs attention. This test is particularly valuable if you're experiencing unexplained fatigue, muscle twitching, or neurological symptoms, or if you have conditions like kidney disease, heart problems, or take medications that affect fluid balance. By understanding your sodium levels, you and your healthcare provider can work together to optimize your body's fluid balance, ensuring your cells, nerves, and muscles have exactly what they need to keep you feeling your best.

Symptoms

Essential for individuals with electrolyte symptoms, kidney or heart conditions, or anyone needing comprehensive fluid balance and electrolyte assessment.

Questions

  • Sodium is essential for fluid balance, nerve transmission, muscle contraction, blood pressure regulation, and maintaining proper cellular function throughout the body.
  • High sodium (hypernatremia) may indicate dehydration, excessive sodium intake, kidney problems, or certain hormonal disorders, requiring fluid management and treatment.
  • Low sodium (hyponatremia) may indicate overhydration, kidney disease, heart failure, liver disease, or certain medications, potentially causing serious neurological symptoms.
  • Causes include kidney disease, heart failure, liver disease, certain medications (especially diuretics), excessive fluid intake or loss, and hormonal disorders.
  • Most health organizations recommend limiting sodium intake to 2,300mg or less per day, with lower amounts (1,500mg) recommended for certain individuals.
  • High-sodium foods include processed foods, restaurant meals, canned soups, deli meats, cheese, and foods with added salt or sodium-containing preservatives.

How to prepare

No special preparation required. Inform healthcare provider of all medications, particularly diuretics and blood pressure medications, and recent fluid intake that might affect sodium levels.

After the test

Address abnormal sodium through appropriate fluid and electrolyte management, dietary modifications, medication adjustments, and treatment of underlying conditions. Work with specialists as needed.

Your test results will be available in your private dashboard. If there are any urgent issues, we'll let you know so you can follow up with your health professional.

Understanding results

Results show sodium levels compared to normal ranges. Abnormal levels may indicate electrolyte imbalances, dehydration, overhydration, or underlying conditions requiring appropriate treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most collection centres accept walk-ins. Some may require a booking - check details when you click on your chosen location.

If your test needs fasting, we’ll include that in your instructions after you order. Fasting usually means no food for 8–12 hours, but water is fine.

Just your pathology referral form (we email it to you)

Of course. Just maybe don’t bring the friend who faints at the sight of blood.

They’re the highly trained professionals who take your blood sample - with a steady hand and a sharp needle. They love blood, but don’t worry… they’re not vampires. Just legends who make blood tests quick, clean, and (almost) painless.

Some of our tests include Urine, Stool, Saliva and more. Each test will have a clear description on what sample you will need to give and instructions on how.
