Nickel Blood Test

$55.00 AUD

Do you have a nickel allergy, a metal joint implant, or occupational nickel exposure you want to investigate?

The Nickel Blood Test measures systemic nickel exposure. Nickel is the most common cause of metal contact allergy in Australia, and blood nickel testing is used to investigate occupational exposure, monitor nickel-containing joint implants, and assess levels in people with suspected nickel sensitivity.

Overview

The Nickel Blood Test measures the concentration of nickel in your blood, reflecting recent and ongoing systemic exposure to this metal.

Blood nickel testing is most commonly used in three contexts: joint replacement monitoring, allergy and systemic nickel sensitivity investigation, and occupational monitoring.

Symptoms

This test suits you if you have a known nickel allergy, a joint replacement containing nickel-bearing alloys, you work in metalworking or electroplating, or your practitioner has included nickel as part of a broader metals screen.

Questions

  • It measures the concentration of nickel in your blood, reflecting recent and ongoing systemic exposure.
  • No. Contact allergy is diagnosed through skin patch testing. Blood nickel provides information about systemic exposure.
  • Some implants contain nickel alloys. Monitoring helps track whether wear is occurring at an expected rate.
  • Yes. Foods high in nickel include chocolate, nuts, legumes, oats, and wholegrains.
  • Share your result with your practitioner. They will assess the likely source and recommend next steps.

How to prepare

No fasting is required. This is a standard blood draw test. If you have a joint implant, bring any relevant documentation if your practitioner has requested it.

After the test

Share your results with your healthcare practitioner. The appropriate follow-up depends on why you tested — implant monitoring, allergy investigation, or occupational exposure.

Your test results will be available in your private dashboard. If there are any urgent issues, we'll let you know so you can follow up with your health professional.

Understanding results

Your result shows your blood nickel concentration measured against the reference range for the general population. For implant patients, reference levels should be interpreted against implant-specific guidance. Blood nickel levels do not confirm or rule out nickel allergy — contact allergy is diagnosed through skin patch testing.

Simple health checks in my control

I didn't know that private blood tests were an option. Tried this platform as the packages suited what I wanted for a good price. Easy to follow instructions, and super quick results. Platform provides more information than my gp's ever have on the tests and what the results meant. Would like more clinics to be able to test at (specifically Capital Pathology) but there is a decent network. Will continue to use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most collection centres accept walk-ins. Some may require a booking - check details when you click on your chosen location.

If your test needs fasting, we’ll include that in your instructions after you order. Fasting usually means no food for 8–12 hours, but water is fine.

Just your pathology referral form (we email it to you)

Of course. Just maybe don’t bring the friend who faints at the sight of blood.

They’re the highly trained professionals who take your blood sample - with a steady hand and a sharp needle. They love blood, but don’t worry… they’re not vampires. Just legends who make blood tests quick, clean, and (almost) painless.

Some of our tests include Urine, Stool, Saliva and more. Each test will have a clear description on what sample you will need to give and instructions on how.
