Mercury Whole Blood Test

$55.00 AUD

Do you eat a lot of fish or have concerns about mercury exposure from your diet, fillings, or workplace?

The Mercury Whole Blood Test measures total mercury in your blood, including methylmercury from fish and seafood and inorganic mercury from dental amalgam or occupational sources. Mercury exposure in Australia comes mainly from eating large predatory fish such as shark, swordfish, and orange roughy.

Overview

The Mercury Whole Blood Test measures total mercury in your blood, capturing both methylmercury (from fish) and inorganic mercury (from amalgam fillings and occupational sources).

Methylmercury is the form most Australians encounter. It accumulates up the food chain, reaching highest concentrations in large, long-lived predatory fish. Whole blood is the preferred sample type for methylmercury assessment because methylmercury binds to red blood cells.

Blood mercury reflects relatively recent exposure, with methylmercury having a half-life of roughly 50 to 70 days in the blood.

Symptoms

This test suits you if you eat fish frequently, particularly large predatory species, you are pregnant, planning to conceive, or breastfeeding, you have occupational exposure to mercury, you have concerns about mercury from dental amalgam fillings, or your practitioner has requested mercury testing.

Questions

  • It measures total mercury in your whole blood, including methylmercury from fish and inorganic mercury from amalgam fillings or occupational sources.
  • Mercury settles into waterways and is converted into methylmercury, which accumulates up the food chain. Large, long-lived predatory fish contain the highest concentrations.
  • Yes. Fish consumption in the days before testing will influence your blood mercury level.
  • For most people with normal kidney function, amalgam contributes modestly to total blood mercury compared to dietary intake.
  • Yes. Methylmercury crosses the placenta and developing foetuses are sensitive to its effects.
  • You attend a pathology collection centre for a standard blood draw.

How to prepare

If the goal is to assess your baseline exposure from everyday diet, test at a time representative of your typical fish intake rather than immediately after a period of unusually high or low consumption.

No fasting is required. This is a standard blood draw test at the pathology centre.

After the test

Share your results with your doctor. If your level is elevated and fish consumption appears to be the source, your practitioner may advise adjusting your intake of high-mercury species. For occupational exposure, your workplace health team should also be involved.

Your test results will be available in your private dashboard. If there are any urgent issues, we'll let you know so you can follow up with your health professional.

Understanding results

Your result shows your total blood mercury concentration measured against reference ranges for the general population. For pregnant women and women planning to conceive, there are additional guidance values based on foetal exposure risk.

Share your results with a qualified healthcare practitioner who can review them alongside your dietary habits, exposure history, and any clinical concerns.

Simple health checks in my control

I didn't know that private blood tests were an option. Tried this platform as the packages suited what I wanted for a good price. Easy to follow instructions, and super quick results. Platform provides more information than my gp's ever have on the tests and what the results meant. Would like more clinics to be able to test at (specifically Capital Pathology) but there is a decent network. Will continue to use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most collection centres accept walk-ins. Some may require a booking - check details when you click on your chosen location.

If your test needs fasting, we’ll include that in your instructions after you order. Fasting usually means no food for 8–12 hours, but water is fine.

Just your pathology referral form (we email it to you)

Of course. Just maybe don’t bring the friend who faints at the sight of blood.

They’re the highly trained professionals who take your blood sample - with a steady hand and a sharp needle. They love blood, but don’t worry… they’re not vampires. Just legends who make blood tests quick, clean, and (almost) painless.

Some of our tests include Urine, Stool, Saliva and more. Each test will have a clear description on what sample you will need to give and instructions on how.
