Overview

HbA1c (glycated haemoglobin) measures the percentage of haemoglobin in your red blood cells that has glucose attached to it. Because red blood cells live for roughly 120 days, your HbA1c reading reflects your average blood glucose over the past 2 to 3 months. This makes it more informative than a single fasting glucose test.

This test is widely used in metabolic health monitoring. It can help identify blood sugar trends before symptoms become obvious.

Symptoms

This test evaluates long-term blood glucose control. It may be relevant if you experience fatigue, increased thirst, frequent urination, sugar cravings, or unexplained weight changes.

Questions

  • The percentage of haemoglobin bound to glucose, reflecting your average blood sugar over 2 to 3 months.
  • No. HbA1c is not affected by recent meals.
  • Anyone monitoring blood sugar trends or managing diabetes risk.
  • Most supplements do not directly affect HbA1c.
  • Every 3 months is common for tracking long-term trends.

Simple health checks in my control

I didn't know that private blood tests were an option. Tried this platform as the packages suited what I wanted for a good price. Easy to follow instructions, and super quick results. Platform provides more information than my gp's ever have on the tests and what the results meant. Would like more clinics to be able to test at (specifically Capital Pathology) but there is a decent network. Will continue to use.
