Fasting Insulin Blood Test

$55.00 AUD

Struggling with weight gain, fatigue, or sugar cravings even though your glucose tests have come back normal, and wondering whether insulin resistance could be playing a role?

Measures fasting insulin, an early marker of insulin resistance that often rises before glucose or HbA1c become abnormal. Used to investigate metabolic syndrome, PCOS, and blood sugar dysregulation.

Overview

Think of insulin as your body's key that unlocks your cells so they can use sugar for energy. The Fasting Insulin test measures how much of this key your body produces when you haven't eaten for 8-12 hours, giving us a clear picture of your metabolic health. Just like checking your car's engine when it's idling, this test reveals how well your insulin system works at rest, without the influence of recent meals.

This test is especially valuable because it can catch problems early, often years before diabetes develops. When your fasting insulin levels are too high, it usually means your body is working overtime to keep your blood sugar normal – a condition called insulin resistance that can lead to weight gain, fatigue, and eventually diabetes. Whether you have a family history of diabetes, struggle with unexplained weight gain, or simply want to stay ahead of potential metabolic issues, this test provides crucial insights that can help you make informed decisions about your health and catch problems while they're still manageable.

Symptoms

This test helps identify insulin resistance, the condition where cells stop responding efficiently to insulin, forcing the pancreas to produce more to compensate. It's used in the investigation of metabolic syndrome, PCOS, unexplained weight gain (particularly around the abdomen), energy crashes after meals, and in people who want to understand their metabolic health more deeply.

Questions

  • Standard diabetes testing focuses on blood glucose. Fasting insulin provides a complementary picture and can reveal insulin resistance even when glucose is still normal.
  • Insulin resistance means your cells are less responsive to insulin's signal to absorb glucose. To compensate, your pancreas produces more insulin.
  • Insulin resistance is common in women with PCOS and can drive some of its key symptoms.
  • Yes, testing both together allows calculation of HOMA-IR, an index of insulin resistance.
  • Yes, in many cases. Dietary changes, regular physical activity, and weight management can significantly improve insulin sensitivity.

How to prepare

Fast for 8-12 hours before your blood draw. Water is fine throughout. An early morning appointment is recommended. Avoid intense exercise the day before, as it can temporarily lower fasting insulin and affect the result. Take regular medications as normal unless your practitioner advises otherwise.

After the test

Take your fasting insulin result to your GP or an endocrinologist. If insulin resistance is identified, they'll discuss dietary and lifestyle changes that can meaningfully improve insulin sensitivity. Consider also testing fasting glucose and HbA1c if you haven't done so recently.

Your test results will be available in your private dashboard. If there are any urgent issues, we'll let you know so you can follow up with your health professional.

Understanding results

- Fasting insulin below 10 mIU/L is generally considered normal, though some practitioners use more specific targets based on context.
- Levels in the 10-20 mIU/L range alongside normal glucose may indicate early or compensated insulin resistance.
- Elevated fasting insulin with normal glucose is a common early pattern. The pancreas is working harder to maintain blood sugar control.
- For the most complete picture, consider pairing fasting insulin with fasting glucose. From these two values, HOMA-IR (a calculated index of insulin resistance) can be derived.

Simple health checks in my control

I didn't know that private blood tests were an option. Tried this platform as the packages suited what I wanted for a good price. Easy to follow instructions, and super quick results. Platform provides more information than my gp's ever have on the tests and what the results meant. Would like more clinics to be able to test at (specifically Capital Pathology) but there is a decent network. Will continue to use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most collection centres accept walk-ins. Some may require a booking - check details when you click on your chosen location.

If your test needs fasting, we’ll include that in your instructions after you order. Fasting usually means no food for 8–12 hours, but water is fine.

Just your pathology referral form (we email it to you)

Of course. Just maybe don’t bring the friend who faints at the sight of blood.

They’re the highly trained professionals who take your blood sample - with a steady hand and a sharp needle. They love blood, but don’t worry… they’re not vampires. Just legends who make blood tests quick, clean, and (almost) painless.

Some of our tests include Urine, Stool, Saliva and more. Each test will have a clear description on what sample you will need to give and instructions on how.
