Leptin Blood Test

$88.35 AUD

Struggling with persistent hunger or difficulty managing your weight despite doing the right things, and wondering whether your leptin levels could be part of the picture?

Measures leptin, the hormone produced by fat cells that regulates appetite and energy balance. Used to assess satiety signalling and investigate possible leptin resistance. Requires fasting before collection.

Overview

The Leptin Blood Test measures a crucial hormone that acts as your body's internal fuel gauge, telling your brain when you've had enough to eat and should stop feeling hungry. Produced mainly by your fat cells, leptin is like a messenger that travels to your brain to report on your body's energy stores – when you have plenty of fuel stored up, leptin levels rise to suppress your appetite and boost your metabolism, helping maintain a healthy weight naturally.

This test is particularly valuable if you're struggling with unexplained weight gain, constant hunger despite eating well, or difficulty losing weight even with proper diet and exercise. Abnormal leptin levels can reveal issues like leptin resistance, where your brain essentially becomes "deaf" to leptin's "stop eating" signals, leading to persistent hunger and weight gain even when your body has adequate energy stores. By understanding your leptin levels, you and your healthcare provider can identify potential hormonal roadblocks to healthy weight management and develop more targeted strategies to optimize your metabolism and appetite control.

Symptoms

To assess leptin levels as part of metabolic health evaluation, investigate appetite regulation, explore possible leptin resistance, and contribute to a broader picture of energy balance and endocrine function.

Questions

  • Leptin resistance is a state where the brain fails to respond normally to leptin signals, despite adequate or high leptin levels. This means hunger is not effectively suppressed and energy expenditure is not increased as it should be. It is associated with obesity and metabolic dysfunction, though the mechanisms are still being researched.
  • Yes, fasting for 8–12 hours is recommended for the most consistent result. Leptin fluctuates with food intake and is best measured in the morning after an overnight fast.
  • Leptin testing provides information about your hormonal signalling, but it does not prescribe a treatment approach. Results may help a practitioner understand whether leptin resistance is part of your metabolic picture. Always discuss weight management strategies with a qualified healthcare professional.
  • Women generally carry a higher proportion of body fat than men, and since leptin is produced by fat cells, this results in higher baseline leptin levels. Oestrogen also promotes leptin production, which contributes to the sex difference.
  • No. Genetic leptin deficiency is extremely rare, with only a few hundred cases documented worldwide. It causes severe early-onset obesity in childhood. The more common finding in adults is leptin excess with resistance, not deficiency.

How to prepare

Fasting for 8–12 hours before your blood draw is recommended. Leptin levels are influenced by food intake, sleep, and recent energy balance. Testing in the morning after an overnight fast gives the most consistent baseline. Collect before strenuous exercise.

After the test

Share your results with your GP, endocrinologist, or practitioner specialising in metabolic health. Leptin is one piece of a broader metabolic picture and is most useful when interpreted alongside insulin, fasting glucose, lipids, and clinical assessment.

Your test results will be available in your private dashboard. If there are any urgent issues, we'll let you know so you can follow up with your health professional.

Understanding results

Leptin is measured in nanograms per millilitre (ng/mL). Reference ranges vary significantly by sex and body composition:

- Women generally have higher leptin levels than men due to greater fat mass distribution.
- Men: typical range 2–5 ng/mL in lean individuals, but highly variable.
- Women: typical range 7–25 ng/mL in adults, but highly variable.

High leptin: In the context of excess body fat, high leptin may indicate leptin resistance. In lean individuals, high leptin can indicate other hormonal or inflammatory states.

Low leptin: Associated with very low body fat, severe caloric restriction, anorexia nervosa, or rare genetic leptin deficiency (extremely rare).

Leptin results must be interpreted alongside BMI, body composition, and other metabolic markers. There is no single threshold for clinical action. Context is everything.

Simple health checks in my control

I didn't know that private blood tests were an option. Tried this platform as the packages suited what I wanted for a good price. Easy to follow instructions, and super quick results. Platform provides more information than my gp's ever have on the tests and what the results meant. Would like more clinics to be able to test at (specifically Capital Pathology) but there is a decent network. Will continue to use.

Most collection centres accept walk-ins. Some may require a booking - check details when you click on your chosen location.

If your test needs fasting, we’ll include that in your instructions after you order. Fasting usually means no food for 8–12 hours, but water is fine.

Just your pathology referral form (we email it to you)

Of course. Just maybe don’t bring the friend who faints at the sight of blood.

They’re the highly trained professionals who take your blood sample - with a steady hand and a sharp needle. They love blood, but don’t worry… they’re not vampires. Just legends who make blood tests quick, clean, and (almost) painless.

Some of our tests include Urine, Stool, Saliva and more. Each test will have a clear description on what sample you will need to give and instructions on how.
