Creatinine Blood Test

$38.00 AUD

Want to check your creatinine level to get a picture of how your kidneys are filtering your blood?

Measures creatinine, a muscle metabolism waste product filtered by healthy kidneys. Elevated levels indicate impaired kidney filtration. Ordered alongside urea and eGFR as part of a kidney function panel.

Overview

Creatinine is a waste product generated by normal muscle metabolism. It is produced at a fairly constant rate, filtered out of the blood by the kidneys, and excreted in urine. When kidney filtration declines, creatinine accumulates in the blood.

One important consideration is that creatinine is influenced by muscle mass. People with greater muscle mass naturally produce more creatinine. This is one reason why eGFR, which adjusts for age and sex, is often a more reliable indicator.

A single elevated creatinine result does not confirm kidney disease. Dehydration, recent exercise, high protein intake, and certain medications can temporarily raise levels.

Symptoms

Suited to people monitoring kidney health, managing conditions that affect kidney function such as diabetes or hypertension, checking the kidney effects of long-term medications, or investigating symptoms such as fatigue, swelling, or changes in urination.

Questions

  • A waste product from normal muscle metabolism that the kidneys filter out.
  • No fasting is required. Avoid large amounts of cooked meat beforehand.
  • Yes. People with greater muscle mass produce more creatinine.
  • Creatinine is the raw measurement. eGFR is a calculation based on creatinine, age, and sex that better estimates kidney filtration.
  • Impaired kidney function, dehydration, high protein intake, exercise, and certain medications.

How to prepare

No fasting is required. Drink water as normal. Avoid eating large amounts of cooked meat in the 24 hours before the test. Let your practitioner know about any medications you take.

After the test

Share your results with your GP. If creatinine is elevated, your practitioner may request additional tests such as eGFR, urea, or urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio.

Your test results will be available in your private dashboard. If there are any urgent issues, we'll let you know so you can follow up with your health professional.

Understanding results

Results are reported in micromoles per litre. A typical range for adult males is approximately 60 to 110 umol/L, and for adult females approximately 45 to 90 umol/L. Elevated creatinine may indicate impaired kidney filtration. A single elevated result does not confirm kidney disease.

Simple health checks in my control

I didn't know that private blood tests were an option. Tried this platform as the packages suited what I wanted for a good price. Easy to follow instructions, and super quick results. Platform provides more information than my gp's ever have on the tests and what the results meant. Would like more clinics to be able to test at (specifically Capital Pathology) but there is a decent network. Will continue to use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most collection centres accept walk-ins. Some may require a booking - check details when you click on your chosen location.

If your test needs fasting, we’ll include that in your instructions after you order. Fasting usually means no food for 8–12 hours, but water is fine.

Just your pathology referral form (we email it to you)

Of course. Just maybe don’t bring the friend who faints at the sight of blood.

They’re the highly trained professionals who take your blood sample - with a steady hand and a sharp needle. They love blood, but don’t worry… they’re not vampires. Just legends who make blood tests quick, clean, and (almost) painless.

Some of our tests include Urine, Stool, Saliva and more. Each test will have a clear description on what sample you will need to give and instructions on how.
