Working in aerospace, electronics, or metal manufacturing with current or past beryllium dust exposure?
Measures beryllium in the blood to assess occupational exposure. Used in workplace health surveillance for people in aerospace, electronics, nuclear, dental alloy and metal manufacturing where beryllium dust or fumes are a hazard. Reflects recent exposure only; a BeLPT test assesses immune sensitisation separately.
You will be emailed a referral to take to your local collection centre. If you ever have any questions, we're here to help.

Overview
The Beryllium Blood Test measures the concentration of beryllium in your blood, providing an indicator of recent and ongoing occupational exposure.
Beryllium is a lightweight, high-strength metal used in aerospace, defence, electronics, nuclear energy, dental alloys, and specialised metal manufacturing. Workers who machine, weld, grind, or otherwise process beryllium-containing materials may inhale fine beryllium dust or fumes. Inhaled beryllium can trigger an immune response in the lungs, leading to a serious granulomatous condition called chronic beryllium disease (CBD).
Even brief or historical exposure can lead to sensitisation and later disease development. Sensitisation is not assessed by this blood test directly. If your blood beryllium level is elevated, your practitioner may recommend a beryllium lymphocyte proliferation test (BeLPT), which measures the immune system's response to beryllium and is the standard tool for detecting sensitisation.
This test is typically used as part of workplace health surveillance programmes for workers in beryllium-related industries, including baseline testing before employment and periodic monitoring during and after exposure.
Symptoms
This test suits you if you work in aerospace, defence, electronics, nuclear energy, dental alloy production, or specialised metal manufacturing where beryllium is handled, you have a history of working with beryllium-containing materials (even if you have since changed roles), your employer requires beryllium monitoring as part of a workplace health surveillance programme, or your practitioner has requested beryllium testing as part of a broader occupational metals screen.
Questions
It measures the concentration of beryllium in your blood, reflecting recent and ongoing exposure. This is primarily relevant for people with occupational contact with beryllium-containing materials.
Chronic beryllium disease (CBD) is an immune-mediated lung condition that develops in people who have become sensitised to beryllium. It causes granulomatous inflammation in the lungs and can progress over years, leading to breathing difficulties. Not everyone exposed to beryllium develops sensitisation, and not everyone who is sensitised develops CBD.
No. Blood beryllium levels reflect exposure, not sensitisation or disease. Sensitisation is assessed through a separate test called the beryllium lymphocyte proliferation test (BeLPT). If your blood beryllium is elevated, your practitioner may recommend BeLPT and lung function testing as appropriate next steps.
Non-occupational exposure is uncommon but can occur near industrial facilities that process beryllium. Occupational inhalation of beryllium dust or fumes during machining, welding, grinding, or processing is the primary exposure route of concern.
No level of beryllium exposure is considered completely safe for all individuals. Workplace exposure limits exist to reduce risk, but sensitisation has been reported even at low exposure levels. This is why ongoing monitoring is part of occupational health programmes in beryllium-related industries.

How to prepare
No fasting is required. You can eat and drink normally before your blood draw.
This is a standard blood draw test. A small sample of blood is taken from a vein in your arm at the pathology centre.
Let the pathology staff know about your occupational history with beryllium, including your industry and the type of exposure (machining, welding, grinding, or other contact with beryllium-containing materials).
After the test
Share your results with your occupational physician or workplace health and safety team. They can assess your result in the context of your exposure history and current role.
If your beryllium level is elevated, your practitioner may review your workplace exposure controls and personal protective equipment. They may also recommend a beryllium lymphocyte proliferation test (BeLPT) to check for immune sensitisation, along with lung function testing if clinically indicated.
If your result is within the reference range, it provides a useful baseline for ongoing monitoring, particularly if you continue to work with beryllium-containing materials.
Your test results will be available in your private dashboard. If there are any urgent issues, we'll let you know so you can follow up with your health professional.
Understanding results
Your result shows your blood beryllium concentration measured against the reference range for the general population.
A result within the reference range is consistent with minimal or no recent beryllium exposure. Elevated results indicate higher beryllium levels than expected and suggest recent or ongoing exposure from occupational contact with beryllium-containing materials.
Blood beryllium reflects exposure, not sensitisation or disease. An elevated blood level does not mean you have chronic beryllium disease. Sensitisation is assessed separately through the beryllium lymphocyte proliferation test (BeLPT), which your practitioner may recommend if your blood level is raised.
Share your results with your occupational physician or the healthcare practitioner coordinating your workplace health surveillance. They can interpret the result alongside your exposure history, job role, and any symptoms.

Simple health checks in my control
I didn't know that private blood tests were an option. Tried this platform as the packages suited what I wanted for a good price. Easy to follow instructions, and super quick results. Platform provides more information than my gp's ever have on the tests and what the results meant. Would like more clinics to be able to test at (specifically Capital Pathology) but there is a decent network. Will continue to use.

"I'm a little biased as I work here! However, I love that The Bloody Good Test tracks my health over time. After turning 40, I wanted to make sure I wasn't going to drop dead from something basic I should have known about earlier. Measuring all my core biomarkers each year gives me peace of mind my health is on the right track"

Of course. Just maybe don’t bring the friend who faints at the sight of blood.
They’re the highly trained professionals who take your blood sample - with a steady hand and a sharp needle. They love blood, but don’t worry… they’re not vampires. Just legends who make blood tests quick, clean, and (almost) painless.
Some of our tests include Urine, Stool, Saliva and more. Each test will have a clear description on what sample you will need to give and instructions on how.
