Overview
Amino acids are the building blocks your body uses to make proteins, neurotransmitters, enzymes and hormones. This test measures 26 of them, spanning essential amino acids (which your body cannot produce and must obtain from food), non-essential amino acids and conditionally essential amino acids that become important during illness, stress or heavy training.
The panel includes markers such as leucine, lysine, methionine, glutamine, taurine, glycine and others. Each has distinct roles in muscle repair, energy production, mood regulation, digestive function and immune response. Imbalances may show up as fatigue, poor recovery, mood changes, digestive issues, weak immunity or difficulty building and maintaining muscle. This test is particularly relevant for athletes, people following restricted diets, those under chronic stress, and anyone wanting a detailed view of their protein metabolism and nutrient utilisation.
Symptoms
This test assesses your amino acid balance, which affects energy, mood, digestion, muscle maintenance and metabolic function. It may be relevant if you experience fatigue, poor recovery, low mood, sleep issues, digestive discomfort, hair or nail changes, or difficulty building muscle. It is particularly useful for athletes, people with dietary restrictions, and those investigating chronic symptoms that may be linked to protein metabolism.
Questions
It measures 26 amino acids (essential, non-essential and conditionally essential) from a dried blood spot sample collected at home.
Amino acid imbalances can affect energy, recovery, mood, digestion, immune function and muscle maintenance. Identifying specific deficiencies helps guide targeted nutrition.
Yes. Fasting overnight before collection provides the most accurate baseline levels.
Yes. Protein powders and amino acid supplements will influence your readings. Your practitioner can advise on timing relative to supplementation.
Every 3 to 6 months is reasonable, or when making significant changes to your diet or supplementation regimen.

How to prepare
1. Prepare Your Kit
Wash your hands with warm water and dry them thoroughly. Lay out your kit contents (dried blood collection card, lancet, alcohol pad, gauze pad, bandage and return envelope) on a clean surface. Warming your hands and shaking them gently can help increase blood flow for easier collection.
2. Fasting
This test requires fasting for the most accurate baseline reading. Collect your sample first thing in the morning before eating or drinking anything other than water.
3. Collect Your Sample
Use the provided lancet to perform a quick finger prick. Allow one or more drops of blood to fall onto the designated circles on the dried blood spot card. Ensure the circles are fully saturated, but avoid touching the card with your fingers.
4. Let It Dry
Allow your blood spot sample to dry completely at room temperature before packaging. This usually takes a few minutes. Do not cover or seal the card until dry.
5. Pack and Return
Once dry, place the card and all components back into the return envelope provided. Seal and mail it using the pre-paid return label. Your sample will be analysed at our specialised lab.
After the test
Share your results with a qualified practitioner who can interpret the amino acid patterns alongside your diet, training, symptoms and health goals. They can advise on whether targeted supplementation, dietary adjustments or further testing may be appropriate.
Your test results will be available in your private dashboard. If there are any urgent issues, we'll let you know so you can follow up with your health professional.
Understanding results
Your results show the levels of each of the 26 amino acids measured. Results are compared against reference ranges. Low levels of specific amino acids may point to dietary insufficiency, absorption issues or increased metabolic demand. Elevated levels may reflect excess intake or metabolic pathway issues. Your practitioner can identify patterns across the panel and relate them to your symptoms and dietary habits.

Simple health checks in my control
I didn't know that private blood tests were an option. Tried this platform as the packages suited what I wanted for a good price. Easy to follow instructions, and super quick results. Platform provides more information than my gp's ever have on the tests and what the results meant. Would like more clinics to be able to test at (specifically Capital Pathology) but there is a decent network. Will continue to use.

"I'm a little biased as I work here! However, I love that The Bloody Good Test tracks my health over time. After turning 40, I wanted to make sure I wasn't going to drop dead from something basic I should have known about earlier. Measuring all my core biomarkers each year gives me peace of mind my health is on the right track"
