Overview

Strontium is chemically similar to calcium, and your body handles it through the same pathways. It gets incorporated into bone tissue alongside calcium. This blood test measures your strontium levels for supplement monitoring or environmental exposure assessment.

Symptoms

Suited to people taking strontium supplements for bone health, those with environmental or occupational exposure concerns, people with unexplained bone or kidney issues, or anyone living in areas with known strontium contamination.

Questions

  • Testing helps ensure you are in a therapeutic range without excessive accumulation.
  • Yes. Strontium in bones can artificially increase DEXA scan readings.
  • Strontium has a long half-life in bone tissue (several years).
  • Supplements provide controlled doses. Environmental exposure is typically uncontrolled.
  • Very high levels may interfere with calcium metabolism.
  • Generally no. Testing while on supplements helps assess your actual levels.

How to prepare

No fasting required. If you take strontium supplements, continue your usual routine unless your healthcare provider advises otherwise.

After the test

If levels are elevated from environmental sources, your healthcare provider can help identify steps to reduce exposure. If levels are high from supplements, a dose adjustment may be discussed.

Your test results will be available in your private dashboard. If there are any urgent issues, we'll let you know so you can follow up with your health professional.

Understanding results

Normal strontium levels are typically below 50 ug/L. Levels between 50 and 200 ug/L may reflect environmental exposure or supplement use. Levels above 200 ug/L suggest more significant exposure.

Simple health checks in my control

I didn't know that private blood tests were an option. Tried this platform as the packages suited what I wanted for a good price. Easy to follow instructions, and super quick results. Platform provides more information than my gp's ever have on the tests and what the results meant. Would like more clinics to be able to test at (specifically Capital Pathology) but there is a decent network. Will continue to use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most collection centres accept walk-ins. Some may require a booking - check details when you click on your chosen location.

If your test needs fasting, we’ll include that in your instructions after you order. Fasting usually means no food for 8–12 hours, but water is fine.

Just your pathology referral form (we email it to you)

Of course. Just maybe don’t bring the friend who faints at the sight of blood.

They’re the highly trained professionals who take your blood sample - with a steady hand and a sharp needle. They love blood, but don’t worry… they’re not vampires. Just legends who make blood tests quick, clean, and (almost) painless.

Some of our tests include Urine, Stool, Saliva and more. Each test will have a clear description on what sample you will need to give and instructions on how.
