Gamma-glutamyl Transferase (GGT) Blood Test

$38.00 AUD

Want to check your GGT level as part of monitoring your liver health or alcohol's effect on your liver?

Measures GGT, a liver and bile duct enzyme sensitive to alcohol use and medication effects. Often ordered alongside other liver markers to assess liver health or clarify whether an elevated ALP is from the liver rather than bone.

Overview

GGT (gamma-glutamyl transferase) is a liver enzyme that responds sensitively to alcohol consumption, certain medications, and bile duct problems. It often elevates before other liver markers, providing early warning that your liver is under stress.

This enzyme plays a role in cellular antioxidant defences and amino acid transport. When liver cells are stressed or bile ducts are obstructed, GGT spills into the bloodstream at detectable levels. Because it responds strongly to alcohol, GGT serves as both a health monitoring tool and a marker of drinking patterns.

The test suits Australians who drink regularly and want to monitor liver health, those taking medications that can affect the liver, and anyone investigating unexplained symptoms like fatigue, abdominal discomfort, or jaundice that might indicate liver or biliary problems.

Symptoms

Suited to people investigating abnormal liver function results, monitoring the liver effects of medications or alcohol use, or assessing for bile duct conditions. GGT is also useful for distinguishing whether an elevated ALP result is coming from the liver (rather than bone).

Questions

  • GGT (gamma-glutamyl transferase) is an enzyme found mainly in the liver and bile ducts. It rises in response to liver stress, bile duct obstruction, alcohol use, and certain medications. Measuring it helps your practitioner assess liver health and investigate abnormal results on other liver tests.
  • No fasting is required. You can eat and drink normally. However, avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours before the test if you want results that reflect your liver's baseline state, as recent drinking will raise GGT.
  • GGT is sensitive to regular alcohol consumption and is often elevated in people who drink heavily. However, it can also be raised by medications, liver disease, and bile duct conditions unrelated to alcohol. Your practitioner will interpret it alongside your history and other results.
  • ALP is produced by both the liver and bone tissue. If ALP is elevated but GGT is normal, the ALP rise is more likely to be coming from bone. If both ALP and GGT are elevated, the liver or bile ducts are the more likely source.
  • A range of medications can elevate GGT, including anticonvulsants, barbiturates, some antibiotics, statins, and certain herbal supplements. Let your practitioner know about everything you take regularly so they can interpret your result accurately.
  • Results are sent directly to you via the Bloody Good Tests platform. Share them with your GP or healthcare practitioner for interpretation in the context of your symptoms and health history.

How to prepare

No fasting is required for a GGT test. Drink water as normal.

Let your practitioner know about any medications you take, as many prescription and over-the-counter drugs can raise GGT. Alcohol consumption in the days before the test will affect results, so avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours beforehand if you want a baseline reading that reflects your liver's resting state. A healthcare professional will take a blood sample from a vein in your arm.

After the test

Share your results with your GP or relevant specialist. If your GGT is elevated, your practitioner may request additional tests such as ALT, AST, ALP, bilirubin, or a full liver function panel to build a clearer picture.

If your result is within the normal range but you have ongoing symptoms, your practitioner may investigate other causes.

Your test results will be available in your private dashboard. If there are any urgent issues, we'll let you know so you can follow up with your health professional.

Understanding results

Results show GGT levels compared to normal ranges. Elevated levels may indicate liver damage, bile duct problems, or alcohol-related liver injury requiring further evaluation and appropriate treatment.

Simple health checks in my control

I didn't know that private blood tests were an option. Tried this platform as the packages suited what I wanted for a good price. Easy to follow instructions, and super quick results. Platform provides more information than my gp's ever have on the tests and what the results meant. Would like more clinics to be able to test at (specifically Capital Pathology) but there is a decent network. Will continue to use.

Of course. Just maybe don’t bring the friend who faints at the sight of blood.

They’re the highly trained professionals who take your blood sample - with a steady hand and a sharp needle. They love blood, but don’t worry… they’re not vampires. Just legends who make blood tests quick, clean, and (almost) painless.

Some of our tests include Urine, Stool, Saliva and more. Each test will have a clear description on what sample you will need to give and instructions on how.
