How to prepare
No fasting is required for a GGT test. Drink water as normal.
Let your practitioner know about any medications you take, as many prescription and over-the-counter drugs can raise GGT. Alcohol consumption in the days before the test will affect results, so avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours beforehand if you want a baseline reading that reflects your liver's resting state. A healthcare professional will take a blood sample from a vein in your arm.
After the test
Share your results with your GP or relevant specialist. If your GGT is elevated, your practitioner may request additional tests such as ALT, AST, ALP, bilirubin, or a full liver function panel to build a clearer picture.
If your result is within the normal range but you have ongoing symptoms, your practitioner may investigate other causes.
Your test results will be available in your private dashboard. If there are any urgent issues, we'll let you know so you can follow up with your health professional.
Understanding results
Results show GGT levels compared to normal ranges. Elevated levels may indicate liver damage, bile duct problems, or alcohol-related liver injury requiring further evaluation and appropriate treatment.
