Overview

AMH measures a hormone produced by small follicles in the ovaries, providing an estimate of remaining egg supply. Unlike other reproductive hormones that fluctuate throughout the menstrual cycle, AMH remains stable, allowing testing on any day.

This test helps women understand their fertility timeline when planning future pregnancies. Lower AMH suggests fewer eggs remain and may influence decisions about timing or fertility preservation. Higher than expected AMH sometimes indicates polycystic ovary syndrome, available across Australia.

For those undergoing IVF, AMH levels guide medication dosing—predicting how the ovaries will respond to stimulation and helping optimise treatment protocols.

Symptoms

Essential for women assessing fertility potential, planning future pregnancy timing, undergoing IVF evaluation, investigating irregular periods, or concerned about early menopause.

Questions

  • AMH reflects your ovarian reserve—the quantity of remaining eggs. Higher levels indicate more eggs available; lower levels suggest diminished reserve.
  • AMH indicates egg quantity, not quality. Low AMH means fewer eggs remain but doesn't determine whether those eggs can achieve pregnancy.
  • AMH can be tested any day of your menstrual cycle. Levels remain relatively stable throughout the month, unlike FSH or oestradiol.
  • Normal ranges vary by age. Generally 1.0-3.5 ng/mL suggests adequate reserve for age, though interpretation requires clinical context.
  • Very high AMH may indicate polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), where numerous small follicles produce elevated hormone levels.
  • Low AMH indicates reduced egg numbers but pregnancy remains possible. It may influence IVF medication protocols or suggest earlier fertility planning.
  • Yes. AMH naturally decreases as ovarian reserve depletes, declining more rapidly after age 35.

Simple health checks in my control

I didn't know that private blood tests were an option. Tried this platform as the packages suited what I wanted for a good price. Easy to follow instructions, and super quick results. Platform provides more information than my gp's ever have on the tests and what the results meant. Would like more clinics to be able to test at (specifically Capital Pathology) but there is a decent network. Will continue to use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most collection centres accept walk-ins. Some may require a booking - check details when you click on your chosen location.

If your test needs fasting, we’ll include that in your instructions after you order. Fasting usually means no food for 8–12 hours, but water is fine.

Just your pathology referral form (we email it to you)

Of course. Just maybe don’t bring the friend who faints at the sight of blood.

They’re the highly trained professionals who take your blood sample - with a steady hand and a sharp needle. They love blood, but don’t worry… they’re not vampires. Just legends who make blood tests quick, clean, and (almost) painless.

Some of our tests include Urine, Stool, Saliva and more. Each test will have a clear description on what sample you will need to give and instructions on how.
