$37.00 AUD

Experiencing muscle pain, weakness, or aching after starting statins or following intense exercise, and want to check whether there's actual muscle damage?

Overview

Creatine kinase (CK) is an enzyme found primarily in skeletal muscle, with smaller amounts in the heart and brain. Under normal conditions, CK stays inside muscle cells. When muscle tissue is damaged, the enzyme leaks into the bloodstream.

CK is one of the most commonly ordered tests for investigating muscle symptoms. It is used to assess muscle pain, weakness, and stiffness, particularly in people taking statin medications.

Strenuous exercise is the most common non-pathological cause of elevated CK. Very high CK levels raise concern for rhabdomyolysis, a serious condition requiring urgent medical attention.

Symptoms

To detect and assess the extent of muscle damage, investigate unexplained muscle symptoms (especially in people on statins), and evaluate conditions affecting skeletal muscle or the heart.

Questions

  • Strenuous exercise causes microscopic muscle damage that raises CK naturally. Allow at least 48 to 72 hours of rest before testing.
  • A serious condition where rapid muscle breakdown releases CK and myoglobin that can damage the kidneys. It requires urgent medical attention.
  • Yes. Some people have persistently elevated CK due to genetic variation, higher muscle mass, or thyroid conditions.
  • CK-MB was historically used but has been replaced by troponin. Standard CK measures total CK from all sources.
  • No fasting is required.

How to prepare

Avoid vigorous exercise for at least 48 to 72 hours before your blood draw. Intramuscular injections also elevate CK. Inform your pathology centre if you have recently had any injections.

After the test

Share your result with your GP, particularly if you are on statins. Very high CK levels require urgent medical assessment.

Your test results will be available in your private dashboard. If there are any urgent issues, we'll let you know so you can follow up with your health professional.

Understanding results

CK is measured in units per litre (U/L). Men: typically 40 to 320 U/L. Women: typically 25 to 200 U/L.

Mildly elevated (1 to 5x upper limit): Common after exercise or minor injury.
Moderately elevated (5 to 50x): Suggests significant muscle damage.
Severely elevated (above 50x): Indicates rhabdomyolysis.

Simple health checks in my control

I didn't know that private blood tests were an option. Tried this platform as the packages suited what I wanted for a good price. Easy to follow instructions, and super quick results. Platform provides more information than my gp's ever have on the tests and what the results meant. Would like more clinics to be able to test at (specifically Capital Pathology) but there is a decent network. Will continue to use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most collection centres accept walk-ins. Some may require a booking - check details when you click on your chosen location.

If your test needs fasting, we’ll include that in your instructions after you order. Fasting usually means no food for 8–12 hours, but water is fine.

Just your pathology referral form (we email it to you)

Of course. Just maybe don’t bring the friend who faints at the sight of blood.

They’re the highly trained professionals who take your blood sample - with a steady hand and a sharp needle. They love blood, but don’t worry… they’re not vampires. Just legends who make blood tests quick, clean, and (almost) painless.

Some of our tests include Urine, Stool, Saliva and more. Each test will have a clear description on what sample you will need to give and instructions on how.
