Iodine Loading Test Challenge Urine Test Kit

$142.00 AUD

Thyroid symptoms, fatigue, or suspected iodine deficiency, and want the most accurate assessment of your body's actual iodine stores?

Challenge test measuring whole-body iodine sufficiency. After taking a controlled iodine dose, urine collection reveals what percentage your body retains versus excretes. High retention indicates iodine deficiency requiring supplementation.

Overview

The Iodine Loading Test is the gold standard for assessing whole-body iodine sufficiency. Unlike spot urine tests that show recent intake, or blood tests that measure circulating levels, this challenge test reveals whether your body's iodine stores are adequate or depleted.

You take a measured iodine dose, then collect urine for 24 hours. If your tissues are iodine-sufficient, you excrete most of the dose (90%+). If deficient, your body retains the iodine to replenish depleted stores—like a thirsty sponge absorbing water.

This test suits Australians with thyroid symptoms, unexplained fatigue, or suspected iodine deficiency who want definitive assessment of their iodine status beyond what simpler tests provide.

Symptoms

Essential for people with thyroid concerns, suspected iodine deficiency, or anyone wanting the most accurate assessment of whole-body iodine stores.

Questions

  • You take a measured iodine dose, then collect all urine for 24 hours. If your body is iodine-deficient, it retains most of the dose. If sufficient, it excretes the excess.
  • Excreting 90% or more of the dose suggests adequacy. Lower excretion (higher retention) indicates varying degrees of deficiency that may benefit from supplementation.
  • Consult your healthcare provider first. The iodine dose may affect some thyroid conditions. People with hyperthyroidism or autoimmune thyroid disease need medical guidance.
  • Blood and spot urine show recent intake. The loading test assesses total body stores—whether your tissues are saturated or deficient—providing more clinically useful information.
  • Take the iodine dose in the morning, then collect all urine for the next 24 hours. You can continue normal activities during collection.
  • High retention indicates your body needs iodine. Your practitioner will guide gradual supplementation to replenish stores safely while monitoring thyroid function.

How to prepare

Discontinue iodine supplements for 2-4 weeks before testing (consult healthcare provider). Take the provided iodine loading dose as directed. Collect all urine for exactly 24 hours after taking the iodine dose. Avoid seafood and iodized salt for 3 days before and during testing.

After the test

Address iodine deficiency through graduated iodine supplementation starting with lower doses and gradually increasing based on tolerance and follow-up testing. Support thyroid function with selenium and other cofactors. Monitor progress with repeat loading tests and thyroid function assessments.

Your test results will be available in your private dashboard. If there are any urgent issues, we'll let you know so you can follow up with your health professional.

Understanding results

Results show percentage of iodine excreted versus retained. Normal excretion is 90% or higher within 24 hours. Lower excretion percentages indicate iodine deficiency requiring supplementation. Results guide targeted iodine replacement therapy and monitoring protocols.

Simple health checks in my control

I didn't know that private blood tests were an option. Tried this platform as the packages suited what I wanted for a good price. Easy to follow instructions, and super quick results. Platform provides more information than my gp's ever have on the tests and what the results meant. Would like more clinics to be able to test at (specifically Capital Pathology) but there is a decent network. Will continue to use.
