Overview

Coagulation studies measure how quickly your blood clots through different pathways. This panel includes three complementary tests that together assess your complete clotting function.

PT (Prothrombin Time) measures the extrinsic clotting pathway. INR (International Normalised Ratio) standardizes PT results for warfarin monitoring. APTT (Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time) measures the intrinsic pathway, useful for heparin monitoring and hemophilia screening, available across Australia.

These tests are essential for anticoagulant therapy monitoring, pre-surgical assessment, and investigating bleeding or clotting disorders.

Symptoms

Essential for people on anticoagulant therapy, preparing for surgery, with bleeding disorders, liver disease, or unexplained bleeding/bruising.

Questions

  • PT measures extrinsic pathway clotting time. INR standardizes PT for warfarin monitoring. APTT measures intrinsic pathway. Together they assess overall clotting function.
  • INR standardizes PT results across laboratories, allowing consistent warfarin dosing regardless of which lab performs the test.
  • Typically 2.0-3.0 for most conditions, 2.5-3.5 for mechanical heart valves. Your target depends on your specific condition.
  • Warfarin therapy, liver disease, vitamin K deficiency, and clotting factor deficiencies can prolong PT/INR.
  • Heparin therapy, hemophilia, von Willebrand disease, lupus anticoagulant, and factor deficiencies can prolong APTT.
  • Initially weekly until stable, then every 2-4 weeks. More frequent testing if INR is unstable or after medication/diet changes.

Simple health checks in my control

I didn't know that private blood tests were an option. Tried this platform as the packages suited what I wanted for a good price. Easy to follow instructions, and super quick results. Platform provides more information than my gp's ever have on the tests and what the results meant. Would like more clinics to be able to test at (specifically Capital Pathology) but there is a decent network. Will continue to use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most collection centres accept walk-ins. Some may require a booking - check details when you click on your chosen location.

If your test needs fasting, we’ll include that in your instructions after you order. Fasting usually means no food for 8–12 hours, but water is fine.

Just your pathology referral form (we email it to you)

Of course. Just maybe don’t bring the friend who faints at the sight of blood.

They’re the highly trained professionals who take your blood sample - with a steady hand and a sharp needle. They love blood, but don’t worry… they’re not vampires. Just legends who make blood tests quick, clean, and (almost) painless.

Some of our tests include Urine, Stool, Saliva and more. Each test will have a clear description on what sample you will need to give and instructions on how.
