$45.00 AUD

On warfarin or other blood thinners, preparing for surgery, or investigating unexplained bleeding or bruising?

Overview

Coagulation studies measure how quickly your blood clots through different pathways. This panel includes three complementary tests that together assess your clotting function.

PT (Prothrombin Time) measures the extrinsic clotting pathway. INR (International Normalised Ratio) standardises PT results for warfarin monitoring across different laboratories. APTT (Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time) measures the intrinsic pathway, useful for heparin monitoring and haemophilia screening.

These tests are commonly used for anticoagulant therapy monitoring, pre-surgical assessment, and investigating bleeding or clotting disorders.

Symptoms

Suited to people on anticoagulant therapy (warfarin, heparin), preparing for surgery, with a known or suspected bleeding disorder, liver disease, or unexplained bleeding or bruising.

Questions

  • PT measures how long the extrinsic clotting pathway takes. INR standardises PT for warfarin monitoring. APTT measures the intrinsic pathway. Together they assess overall clotting function.
  • INR standardises PT results across laboratories, allowing consistent warfarin dosing regardless of which lab performs the test.
  • Typically 2.0 to 3.0 for most conditions, 2.5 to 3.5 for mechanical heart valves. Your target depends on your specific condition and your doctor's recommendation.
  • Warfarin therapy, liver disease, vitamin K deficiency, and clotting factor deficiencies can prolong PT and INR.
  • Heparin therapy, haemophilia, von Willebrand disease, lupus anticoagulant, and clotting factor deficiencies can prolong APTT.
  • Initially weekly until stable, then every 2 to 4 weeks. More frequent testing may be needed if INR is unstable or after changes to medications or diet.

How to prepare

No fasting required. If you take warfarin or heparin, take your usual dose as directed unless your doctor advises otherwise. Let the pathology collector know about all medications you are taking, especially blood thinners and supplements.

After the test

Your test results will be available in your private dashboard. If there are any urgent issues, we'll let you know so you can follow up with your health professional.

Understanding results

Results show your PT, INR, and APTT values compared to reference ranges. For people on warfarin, the therapeutic INR range is typically 2.0 to 3.0 (or 2.5 to 3.5 for mechanical heart valves). Values outside your target range may require dose adjustment. Your doctor will interpret results alongside your medication regimen and clinical context.

Simple health checks in my control

I didn't know that private blood tests were an option. Tried this platform as the packages suited what I wanted for a good price. Easy to follow instructions, and super quick results. Platform provides more information than my gp's ever have on the tests and what the results meant. Would like more clinics to be able to test at (specifically Capital Pathology) but there is a decent network. Will continue to use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most collection centres accept walk-ins. Some may require a booking - check details when you click on your chosen location.

If your test needs fasting, we’ll include that in your instructions after you order. Fasting usually means no food for 8–12 hours, but water is fine.

Just your pathology referral form (we email it to you)

Of course. Just maybe don’t bring the friend who faints at the sight of blood.

They’re the highly trained professionals who take your blood sample - with a steady hand and a sharp needle. They love blood, but don’t worry… they’re not vampires. Just legends who make blood tests quick, clean, and (almost) painless.

Some of our tests include Urine, Stool, Saliva and more. Each test will have a clear description on what sample you will need to give and instructions on how.
