Swollen or inflamed joints

Overview

Swollen or inflamed joints occur when excess fluid accumulates in the joint space, causing visible enlargement, stiffness, and often pain in the affected area. This condition typically results in reduced range of motion and may cause the joint to feel warm to the touch or appear red and puffy.

Common Causes

Joint swelling and inflammation commonly occur due to overuse or repetitive strain from physical activities, sports, or occupational tasks. Age-related wear and tear on cartilage can lead to inflammatory responses as joints naturally degenerate over time. Carrying excess weight puts additional pressure on joints, particularly in the knees, hips, and ankles, contributing to swelling. Poor posture, prolonged sitting, or maintaining awkward positions can stress joints and trigger inflammation. Minor injuries from falls, bumps, or sudden movements may cause temporary joint swelling as part of the body's natural healing process.

Severity Levels

Mild: You may notice slight puffiness around a joint with minor stiffness that doesn't significantly limit your daily activities. The swelling comes and goes and responds well to rest.

Moderate: The swelling is clearly visible and causes noticeable stiffness that interferes with some activities like gripping objects or walking comfortably. You may experience consistent discomfort that affects your routine.

Severe: Multiple joints are significantly swollen with severe stiffness that makes basic movements difficult or painful. The swelling persists despite rest and significantly impacts your ability to perform daily tasks or work activities.

Medical Attention

Seek medical attention if joint swelling persists for more than a few days, is accompanied by severe pain or fever, or significantly limits your ability to move the joint. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience sudden onset of severe swelling, especially if it affects multiple joints at once. If you have a history of arthritis or autoimmune conditions, consult your healthcare provider when you notice new or worsening joint inflammation.
