Sinus pressure or facial pain

Overview

Sinus pressure or facial pain is a common symptom characterized by aching, throbbing, or tender sensations around the forehead, cheeks, nose, and eyes. This discomfort typically occurs when the sinus cavities become inflamed or blocked, creating a feeling of fullness and pressure in the face.

Common Causes

Sinus pressure and facial pain commonly occur when the air-filled spaces around your nose and eyes become inflamed or blocked. This often happens during colds, allergies, or respiratory infections when mucus builds up and cannot drain properly. Changes in air pressure from flying or weather shifts can also trigger discomfort. Dry air, especially during winter months or in air-conditioned environments, may irritate nasal passages and contribute to sinus issues.

Severity Levels

Mild: You may notice slight discomfort or a feeling of fullness around your face that comes and goes throughout the day. The pressure is noticeable but doesn't significantly impact your daily activities or sleep.

Moderate: The facial pressure becomes more persistent and bothersome, making it difficult to concentrate on work or enjoy normal activities. You may feel like you need to frequently massage your face or take breaks due to the discomfort.

Severe: The pain and pressure are intense and constant, making it very difficult to function normally, sleep, or focus on anything else. You may feel like your face is being squeezed tightly, and the pain may worsen when bending over or lying down.

Medical Attention

Contact your healthcare provider if the pain persists for more than 10 days, worsens after initially improving, or is accompanied by high fever, severe headache, or vision changes. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience sudden severe facial pain, swelling around the eyes, or difficulty breathing. You should also consult a doctor if over-the-counter treatments aren't providing relief after several days of use.
